Default How to keep your belongings safe at the beach.

Going on the Sky in November and visiting the Bahamas. It's just my girlfriend and I so if we plan to visit any beaches we'll have to leave our belongings on shore if we venture into the water.

Any tips on how to keep our stuff safe? It would suck to get a camera or passport or something stolen while we're in the water.

Cruise critic has a nifty beach safe in their webstore. Check it out.

Wal Mart sells a couple of different water-proof boxes in the sporting goods department...take your stuff into the water with you. These are stronger and more water resistant than the CC items mentioned in a prior post.

I just purchased a waterproof Pelican box from Overstock.com. My husband says they are used by his work, so I decided I would get one. I'm a little antsy about taking my passport to Tortola, Samana or St. Thomas. I read on some other threads here that only picture ID is needed (driver's license or passport card) and we plan to just take our license and a copy of our passport. Is this sufficient?

I am a scuba diver and the Pelican brand box is one of the best. You will not have a problem with it.

St. Thomas of course is no problem since it's one of the US Virgin Islands.
The others you'll have to decide what you would do in case you had to fly home from there versus what if you lost them.

Personally we always carry ours but you'll have to decide for yourselves.

Have a great cruise!

By all means, take your passport with you on your cruise, it's alot easier to deal with than a birth certificate or some other doc.
You do not need to carry your passport on shore with you, just a picture ID such as driver license and your cruise ship card. If you want to take a photo copy of your passport on shore feel free, but leave the original in the safe in your cabin.

Well, guess we will take it now that I have actually purchased a good waterproof box! I just measured a canceled passport and checked the dimensions of it and they will fit in there! I feel much better!

Thanks for the good wishes, we really plan to have a great cruise...we are counting down until we leave! Only 53 days to go!

Great I'll look into a waterproof box. It probably looks like a big target though lol. Won't it float all funny and everything while you try and swim?

I guess its best to put it in a ziplock bag too before putting it in the case just in case it gets wet.

We always take our passports with us and this was my plan. Our plan was to just keep the copy of the passport in the bag with our ship card and license. I do feel better taking it since the waterproof box we have bought is a good one, but I would rather not take chances with it's loss. I have to be honest, after having my credit card scammed last Christmas, I am not even comfortable hauling that with me.....I would rather just have the cash on hand.

I'm just curious scchasgal, what do you use to keep your stuff dry while diving? My brother in law and family scuba dives, but he and his brother really aren't close so he won't ask him. I had looked into a waterproof bag that was on a diving site, but I didn't purchase it. I opted for the Pelican box. We like to take our masks and snorkels with us just to see if there are any fish in the water with us...is there something better than I can get that we can attach to ourselves that you might be able to recommend??

I use the Trident Dry box keep my room key and ID in it. It is about 4 inches by 6 inches. There is a rope attached so you can wear around your wrist or attach to scuba equipment. Nothing been wet yet in it.

DS has a pelican case out in the backyard filled with tools and equipment for when he was working on land. It's been out there 4 years now and all is still dry inside. Pelican brand is great!

What other solution other than a pelican case? I mean isn't it weird to wade around with it, what if it gets washed away? Maybe I can take the pelican case and bury it in the sand near a chair when nobody is looking and get it when we leave?

I was just looking at the pelican site and all the small cases say "GREAT FOR RUGGED SPORTS - NOT FOR SWIMMING OR SUBMERGING"

if you attach it to your back, you won't even know that it is there most of the time. If you are just swimming and doing shallow snokel dives, it will be fine attached to your waist (front or back). Don't get a box/bag that is lots bigger than you need...the bigger the box, the more boyant it will feel.

This is what I do and have always done. We find a beach spot away from others. We casually...do not bring attention to yourself, but casually dig a small hole in the sand right there by your beach towel. I usually sit on the edge of our towel and bring my knees up and dig a hole in between my knees. I casually slip my zip lock bag filled with passport, and wallets, and watch, into the hole and cover it up with sand. Done! Never had any problem with anyone digging it back up. Unless someone is watching you do this with the intent of stealing your stuff, which is highly unlikely, after it's buried, it's safe.

That sounds like a good idea. Pretty inconspicuous to sit there and do it. Nice. Just hope I don't forget where I buried it lol. Digging up the whole beach to find it.

Make sure you test those waterproof boxes at home in the sink before you head out!

Well...if you do it in front of your beach towel...and perhaps put your sneakers or shoes on top of it...you will never have to worry where to look. In fact....one could also casually lift your beach towel like you were shaking it out...and casually lay it right on top of the hole you just dug....I've done this too.
