Looks as though NCL has some pretty nice shore excursions in Rome. I know many will say, "do it on your own." But I know I will be more relaxed if I don't have to worry about "missing the boat."
That being said: Which tour do you think would be best for me if I am only interested in seeing Ancient Rome (Forum), the Ceiling of the Sistene Chapel.....and a fountain or two.....hopefully the Trevi (sp?) |

However, if you are at the Forum, I would consider also going in the Colleseum. It is simple to go on your own, and plenty of people will be doing so. You may want to go to your roll call, since what you are looking at, with a ship tour, is at least $100 more per person.

Really multiple ways.
Book through ship. Book with outside tour agency that can meet take you and/or your group into Rome and get you back. Take the train in and do it totally on your own, or meet someone there to get you around town. Each has good and bad. Visit the roll call for sure, and the ports of call where people share what they have done.

IMO the best way too see Rome is with a private tour. These tours can be shared with your cruise mates and well with the money. You wont be spending you time boarding busses and sitting in traffic with a larger vehicle..We did a private tour in the past and loved it.
Check the ports of call link for recommendations..You shouldn't be concerned about missing the boat considering you will be in port for 12 hours and most of the tours are 7 to 8 hours..

We've been to Rome before and we were on our own. Getting lost was part of the adventure
. This time, we'll be on NCL's Jade in June, 2010. We'll probably do it on our own again-as long as you know where to go and when to go back to the port, you should be okey.
