Default Beijing transfer to Xingang

Does Princess arrange a shuttle between Beijing and Xingang? If so,
· Where does it leave from?
· At what time does the shuttle leave?
· What is the price?

If not, has anyone used the high speed train from Beijing to Tianjin?

I have looked on the Cruise Personaliser for my cruise dates, but shore excursions are not available yet.

We did the Beijing to Bangkok cruise and yes we were transferred to Xingang, journey time was about three hours, and be prepared for some very bumpy roads in Xingang. Our driiver couldn't find the ship at first! Can't help you with any other queries as our transfer was included in our package.

Although I'm certainly not a cruise newby by any stretch of the imagination, I'm still leary about transports. Unless I'm in an english speaking country, I'll always use ship's transfers going from the airport to the cruise port etc. I realize my comfort level on this may very well change over the next few years, but not just yet.

Default Beijing transfer to Xingang

We just returned from the Beijing to Bangkok cruise yesterday (the Nov 6-22, 2009, cruise). Because we think Princess tacks on so much extra cost to tours and transports, we made our own arrangements in both Beijing and Bangkok. What we learned is that people who drive in Beijing almost never speak English, and tour guides who speak English almost never drive. When you see the traffic, you'll understand! We contracted with a limo service called Beijing Eastern Taxi to pick us up at the airport and take us to our hotel, and then the day of embarkation, to take us to Badaling (Great Wall), wait for us, then take us to Tianjin at the port. The driver spoke NO English but was absolutely fabulous and knew right where to take us and what we needed, and the company is easy to do business with via email (I've listed info below). if you wanted a guide to provide more narrative and translation, you would pay for an English speaking guide to ride along (we had a wonderful guide for the Beijing city tour, I would highly recommend, if you're interested in English speaking, knowledgable/reliable guides).

Anyway... the transports were challenging because a road was shut down unexpectedly due to fog, and many on the Princess transfers were stuck on the buses an extra hour, because all the Princess buses showed up at once instead of being staggered as planned, so some people had to wait while Princess processed buses based on when they were supposed to have arrived. Our driver dropped us off right by the entrance into the ship's processing (as mentioned, fabulous and knew exactly what we needed to do) and our timing just happened to be "lucky" between a couple Princess buses.
Everything is cost-effective (a little money goes a long way--best to get Yuan in advance of course.) Let me know if you're interested in any more details like the English speaking guides-- but below is the taxi service I would vouch for. If you wanted to take the train, unless you speak Mandarin Chinese, you will want a guide to travel with you, becuase you'll need to either take a cab or bus from the train to the ship anyway and will be challenged with logistics... This is an amazing cruise with respect to experiences, very different trip! Have a great voyage.

Default Princess Transfers

Some of the best money we ever spent was the purchase of a Princess transfer from our Beijing hotel to the ship (Sapphire) in Tianjin. Our bus got lost in Tianjin, too -- in the rain, no less -- so there was considerable comfort in knowing that the ship would wait for us if being lost really got to be a mess somehow. (This was in October of '07) A number of others on our cruise who were looking to save a few dollars encountered all manner of difficulty and near panic as the clock kept ticking and the ride down there seemed to keep getting longer. Several reported being lost for a time.

To be fair, we were unaware of anybody missing the boat, and some insisted their private arrangements to get from Beijing to the ship came off just fine. I have no reason to doubt them.

But for us middle-agers and first time visitors to China, to board the bus at the entrance of the hotel and be delivered to the entrance to the cruise terminal in Tianjin (even though we were lost for a while in the middle of it all) was WORTH the extra dollars.

Good luck. The Beijing to Bangkok itinerary on Princess is (my opinion) the best Asia cruise itinerary by FAR! It was simply wonderful!

The last time we flew into Beijing the cost for the operational hotel overnight, breakfast for two and transport to the port was $119/PP. I did not think that was excessive at all.

Then who in their right mind would pay such an exorbitant rate?

I have to disagree. When we were there last year on Diamond Princess, there was a free shuttle and it was 45 min. or more to take us from the port into Shanghai.

We are, I guess. Not speaking Chinese, it is hopefully the best and least stressed way to get from the airport to a decent hotel, stay overnight, and then the next day from the hotel to the ship.

As I said, I was guessing. I also have no idea where the (currently unknown) hotel is in relation to either the airport or the port.

In any case, it is much less than the three hour ride from Bejing to the nearest port there.
