We were there in 2004 and found it pretty boring. Kind of like sitting back and watching paint dry. The beaches were nice, but not much to do. But maybe in the last 5 years things have changed. Try the Port Of Call threads. I'm sure you will get more information there.

Oh, thought you were looking for information. Why not share your info on the Port Of Call thread. I am sure other cruisers would appreciate the input.

Thanks for the picture! I will be there in less than a month on the Westerdam. Just curious, is this the beach that you have to take a taxi to, or is this within walking distance from the cruise port? I'm sort of assuming it's close because the ship is right there.

Thanks Pipedreams! I loved Costa Maya, and would be happy to take any cruise with a stop there. I had a perfect day there, just relaxing in the sun on the beach, strolling the boardwalk and having a wonderful (and inexpensive) massage on the beach. My son and nephew went parasailing for the first time and had a great experience.

It's too far to walk. The taxi to Mahahual beach is $4 I think. You pay upfront and then you can just take a cab back whenever you want. I think going to the beach is $4 and going back to the pier is FREE?

We just returned from a cruise on the Westerdam and stopped at Costa Maya. We went to the Mahuhual - the taxi fare was $3.00 to the beach and $2.00 returning back to the ship (per person).

$3 there $2 back per person.

We were there two weeks ago, a very nice afternoon was had by everyone, the food prices were good, the massage prices were good ($30 for 1 hour) and a very cool thing, the ships dancers were there, while the wife was getting her massage I got to watch them practicing their lifts and throws.

I know it sounds kind of nerdy, but what these men and women do is amazing to me, with the safety of landing in water they were really doing some moves.

Just back this morning - was in Costa Maya on Friday.
They are really building this area up. The dock side shops are nice and numerous. Diamonds international included. To get to Mahahual (Ma ha well - phonetically) you just walk through the shops and go buy a ticket for the taxi to the beach. Our taxi tickets were $3 each, and ended up being an air-conditioned bus that took a large group to the beach. It offered to let us off at Tequila (I think that is the name) which is the most northern restaurant on the malecon (sidewalk). The bus/taxi would also have taken you farther in if you preferred. The vendors on the malecon were enthusiastic "come here and just look" "please sit here and we'll get you 6 beers for $10." etc. Enthustiastic but not scarily agressive. They'll bargain here too.
We ended up at the El Dolphin which was quite nice. I got a $20 -50 minute massage. (The first quotes were for $25 for 30 minutes, but all the vendors would come down to the $20 for one hour.) It was fabulous but she included my head - and so I ended up with lots of massage oil in my hair. I figured it was like a hot oil treatment. During my massage it started raining, so they moved me into the restaurant to finish the massage, then they called a taxi to come to their back door for us and walked us out to the taxi with an umbrella. Seemed above and beyond service to us. They were friendly and offered great service. The restaurant also had a bathroom with a fresh water shower too. We'd definitely go back to them. Taxi back was $2 per person.
One - warning is to confirm the prices of things before you order. I'd seen prices for $4.00 margaritas, but didn't confirm before I ordered one - and it ended up at $8.00. My mistake - hopefully you'll do better.
Lots of street vendors selling stuff, and they bargain too.
We were content to sit, drink and be massaged, but you could rent jet skis, go fishing, parasailing etc. All those things cost money, but it wasn't as expensive as it would be here in the states.
It was a great day!

Default Oh thank you Pipedreams!

I have to check things but I think I may be going there? I'm a little out there on this upcoming cruise. I wanted to go on a beach cruise, no other anything, you know what I mean? I have no idea what I'm doing but will check soon before I hop on the plane. I love the plane. How are you doing today, just fine, please get comfortable, haha, sure, I will just wait for the drink cart you bet.
I have no idea what I am doing. It would be scary unless you are me.

Westerdam. We sailed with her last year, same time, first week of December, and it seemed to be a nice time to get away. I'm starting to look forward. First 2 days in Naples and then over to the cruise. Veg. I'm thinking how lucky we are.

But that might be fun. What ever happened to that unhappy vegan cruiser? Remember her. She was livid. What a lot of fun we had with her!

We were also in Costa Maya on Friday.
The $3.00 cab rides are now offered on on nice air conditioned buses.
We hung out at Pez Quadro-40 Cannons Hotel. Beers were $3.00--Margaritas were $5.00
Very friendly staff--clean facilities.

Rich, did you eat while in Mahahual? If so, what? (Food, I'm all about food!)

Are you going to write a review? And did you have a Master Chef's Dinner? If you did, do you recall what night it was? (Wanna make sure we either go to the Pinnacle or order room service that night )

Thanks in advance.

The food at Pez Quadro looked good. I consumed a couple oat sodas while the bride got a massage.

The Master Chefs Dinner was Saturday nite. BOOK THE PINNACLE NOW!!
I enjoy the MDR eating with our friends but the Chefs Dinner left a lot to be desired.

I like the MDR too, usually! Was the MC dinner your last night onboard? The only thing I like about the MC dinner is the baked brie and I can probably get one from room service before dinner @ Pinnacle.

Airlink Diva recommended Pez Quadro too, so I guess that's where we'll head to. No oat sodas for us in the middle of the day though

Thanks!
