Default Ginger for motion sickness??

I have read alot of posts that state ginger pills have helped with their motion sickness. I have also read that it is best to start taking it a couple of days prior to departure. Is this correct? Also, do the pills come in capsule form where I can open it up and mix it into something like pudding? One of my kids can't swallow pills yet and I am looking for an alternative. Thanks so much!!

Yes and yes. But if I were you I'd check with the pediatrican before giving ginger to a child too young to swallow a pill. There may even a a wrning label on use on the bottle.

Also look at Seaband ginger gum. You chew it and it takes effect pretty quick.

Dramamine knocks me out so I use ginger. I have to grind up most pills for my older son. He's 12 and big, but gags on pills. I usually put the powder in a shot glass or tiny juice glass with some juice, that way he can drink it real quick, regardless of the taste. The ginger is also good for digestion; eating rich/too much cruise food .

I take the Ginger tablets starting the week before departure I take two pills twice a day with a meal. I get very seasick but this along with bonine if the seas get very rough has worked wonders for me.

When we were kids and our tummies were queasy mom gave us flat ginger ale to help and it did.

I carry ginger every time we cruise. I have a cast iron stomach so I don't take it unless the seas get really rough which they did on the transatlantic. I never got sick so it must have worked!

It has a twang at first but becomes bland after that.

I took one lonely ginger root pill on the Legend last Friday night. I didn't give it long to work before I put on my sea bands, which I had thought were absolutely ridiculous, and then I completely forgot about the pills.
I was fine through 50mph winds and the crazy rough seas of Ida (while it seemed that 90% of the ship was feeling quite sick, as made evident by the constant cleaning of the hallways and stairs).
My kids didn't get seasick this time, but I would consider taking sea bands for my kids in the future. It seems like it would be much easier than getting them to ingest something.

I am not sure about the ginger pills, but I was taking meclizine and I still got sea sick. We went on the Inspiration 10/19/09, and I was fine until I had to sit in this room for a seminar and the curtains started swaying really bad ( This was on Tuesday). After the seminar was over I went to the gift shop and bought the bracelets, and they really do keep you from having any kind of motion sickness. It was worth the 15 bucks, but make sure he wears both of them like directed.

I take ginger as needed for an issue that causes vertigo. Also take it on cruises. i find no need to take it ahead of time. if I begin to feel off center i take two and feel fine within 20 minutes

Default Try Candied Ginger

I find it in the bulk foods section of the food store at about 4-8 dollars per pound. This is real, natural ginger chunks that have been made into candy. We take 3-4 small pieces (about the size of a pea) during the day. We find it to be quite tasty and effective.

Race you to the buffet line, Howard

I have a juice extractor. Every once in a while my acid reflux acts up. I go to the grocery store and get some ginger root. I peel it, run it through an extractor and put it in a bottle in the Fridge. For 3 weeks I take one teaspoon in the morning 30 mins before I eat. Does the trick let me tell you. It burns going down, like strong liquor but ginger like this is an old Chinese remedy that's been around for years.

On the cruise, motion doesn't typically bother me but last year I had a bit of a flare up of my stomach problem and the seas were a bit rough. Along with the rich food, I was suffering a bit. Luckily, I brought a dozen ginger tea bags with me. I went to the local coffee bar, and asked for a cup of hot water. Fixed me right up.

What I'll do this year is the 3 week ginger treatment for 3 weeks before we go and then bring the ginger tea with me like last year. I wish I could figure out how to get a bottle of ginger juice on the airplane but I think they'd stop me.

This is going to sound really strange but my son started work on a ship recently and if any of the crew feel sick or queasy they are told to eat a teaspoon of Tomato Ketchup as it will settle the stomach. I have not had a chance to try it yet. He was also told to have a good meal as this also helps. On a rough day he always heads off for a cooked breakfast !!!

Does anybody know if eating ginger snaps works as well?

If not, what does the candied ginger taste like?? I love ginger bread, ginger muffins, ginger bread men, and ginger snaps. Is it anything like those?

I ask not only for the cruise, but because I think I have found it to really help my stomach issues. I had a container of mini ginger muffins from a store's bakery and on the days I ate four of them (they were very small - you could eat them in one bite if you wished), I had no stomach issues. When I ran out of them, I tried ginger ale, which I know always settles a stomach ache of mine, and that seemed to work, too. So, I'm looking for a long-term solution. My body does not do well with pills.

Somebody posted a link to a site that sells ginger candy, including one with peanut butter in it, but you have to buy it in bulk from them, so I'm not going to do that before knowing how it tastes.

I was doing some internet searching as well, looking for a plan in case my 7 year old gets seasick. I say in several different places that ginger snaps and other ginger cookies work just as well as the candies/gum you can buy.

Thanks for the info., Elektrawmn! I will put ginger snaps on my shopping list! Mmm!

(I definitely would not mind sticking with those mini ginger muffins - they were awesome and had lines of icing on top - but they only came in a carton where half the muffins were pumpkin and nobody here eats those, so they got thrown out. Also, I'm sure they are just seasonal. And they were at one of the bulk stores, not a regular grocery, so they're not easy to just run out and buy.)
