Question Hurricane Ida and cruising out of Baltimore

Hi,
I will be taking my first cruise this weekend out of Baltimore. Hurricane Ida is expected to cause some coastal issues. I will be going on the Granduer of the Seas. Will RC delay departure with bad weather? Has anyone cruised in high seas (20 ft waves). I guess I am a little nervous. Any feed back will be appreciated. Thanks

Usually they post emergency info on their website if they are planning on changing due to hurricanes. I would also call RCI and see what they say. I know that they will try to sail around any major storms if possible.

Default No Problem

I was on the Grandeur out of Balt on the 9/10 cruise to NE and Can. We were in rough seas as soon as we made the turn out of the Cheasapeake around 10 PM that night until 4 PM the following day. The ship rides very well and I don't think you will have any problem other than trying to navigate the buffet line (tough walking with a tray) for breakfast. Opt for the dining room.
You will love the ship, nicest staff I have ever sailed with in 14 cruises.

You are WRONG!!
Take a look at the forecast for the Mid-Atlantic Coast. Ida is still there, and waves are forecast to be over 20 feet over the next couple of days.

I live in Richmond, VA, & we are getting tons of rain (since yesterday) & it will continue into Friday w/ high winds. But it's supposed to be out of here by late Fri. This is from our local weather station's web site:

"For our area, again we expect a lot of rain and windy conditions through later Thursday, with rain gradually moving out during the morning and early afternoon Friday."

So hopefully it'll be fine in the Bay on Sat/Sun.

By this weekend, what little is left of Ida will have scattered over the North Atlantic. You might see some high seas when you pass between the Virginia Capes into the Atlantic, but that can happen any time. She stabilizers on the ship will guarantee you a good ride.

Ida WILL be gone by the weekend....and even if she isn't, it's NOT a dangerous hurricane.....true...it's a storm, and you do NOT want to be swimming at the shore, but on a ship, you'll be fine...don't worry.

We have been getting the rain since yesterday so I think the rain will be gone by the weekend. The Grandeur is a great ship.

HAVE A FANTASTIC TRIP-YOU'LL BE FINE BY THE TIME YOU GO...

I did sail in February OUT OF NY! And we had 18' waves (not quite 20) for the first day it was a little rocky but DH gets sea sick on smaller boats and sometimes in cars but NOTHING even in these waves. So you'll be fine.
Enjoy your trip!

The marine forecast for Bermuda on Monday is for waves 5-9 ft outside the reef, and diminishing.

The Nor'easter formally known as Ida will be gone by Sat. eve., but the seas will still be 12-15 ft the first night.

It will be very safe; however, if you are prone to seasickness, take your medication of choice before leaving Baltimore.

Aloha,

John

I'm in southern NJ and, as we speak, Ida and related mess is off the coast of No Carolina and the Virginia coastal area....and tearing things up pretty good with vicious weather, rain and really, really rough seas.

Our weather is predicted to deteriorate badly tomorrow and Saturday with winds from 35-55 MPH gusting higher, 14-24 foot waves along the Jersey shore. So far, terrible beach erosion - expected to get worse...and waves are starting to come up over the boardwalk in AC and Ocean City. Wildwood and Cape May - the southernmost tip - is really getting slammed.

You'll probably have a very wet departure, cold, windy and very rough seas for a while until you get far enough to the south to be out of the worst of it.

It's a very slow moving event so you are bound to run into some of it. Not to worry....plenty to do inside, lots of good booze around, lounges will be open, food will be delicious and you'll soon be rid of it.

Boy, are you ever wrong! Guess you haven't been following the East Coast weather since yesterday! We were pretty lucky here - only three days of steady rain and some wind. Still cleaning mud off of my front porch.

Default Don't worry, be happy

We dealt with similar storm fears when we took our Grandeur of the Seas cruise out of Baltimore in August. But the captain sailed out to the sea and we missed the whole thing. I usually wear sea bands because I am prone to sea sickness. But the ride was so smooth I took the bands off and did fine throughout the cruise. Maybe I am gaining my sea leggs after 10 cruises!
Enjoy the ship. We were pleasantly surprised. And to work off those extra pounds, you could do worse than walk around the ship a couple of times on the wraparound deck.

The "hurricane" part is over.....but, Ida is still alive and kicking the bejeezus out of the NJ coastline right now.....as well as the Carolinas and Virginia......

NJ coastal areas are predicted 6-8 inches of rain tomorrow and 14-25 waves ashore.

Well, it's pretty much NOT gone! I'm sure you've read about coastal weather in the Carolinas, Virginia, and NJ, right? We had very heavy rainfall here from Monday afternoon through early morning Wed. (Nov 9-11) with some strong winds. I'm still washing rain mud off of my front porch, and my outdoor chair cushions are still soaked. Ida gone? Not today.

Just to let you know that on Saturday you will have bad weather on the bay. This northeaster has taken our beach away and is threatening to take 4 houses. Our community has been out sand bagging all day and we have not even had high tide yet. The bay had been rolling all day and the wind is vicious. Waves are 5 to 7 feet. I have lived here since I was a child and I this is as bad as when Isabel when hit. Just be aware that you might have rough weather on Saturday. Hope you have a get cruise after you get out of the bay.
