I want to book a cruise taking in St Petersburg for a birthday celebration. My options are RCI Jewel of the Seas Scandinavia and Russia in a Junior Suite or NCL Norwegian Sun Baltic Capitals in a Balcony Cabin. The prices are similar but having only cruised once with RCI I have little experience and dont want to make a mess of this expensive holiday.
Are there any experienced cruisers out there willing to offer advice?

Go with Jewel of the Seas. I've never been on RCI; however, I have sailed with NCL. Eventhough I am a big NCL fan, I can tell you that the Sun is quite a bit smaller and older than RCI Jewel. We went on the Sun (in a Penthouse) this past September. While we enjoyed our cruise, we probably would not sail on that ship again unless they offered a spectacular itinerary that other ships weren't. If you have any other specific questions, please let me know. Hope this helps

We have never been on NCL but we did a transatlantic on RCL's Jewel of the Seas and loved the ship. It isn't as big as some of the newer RCL ships but had more than enough to do and see and we liked that. The crew was friendly and service was good. The food was good and there was plenty of it. The ship seemed to be well maintained and clean. Plus if you are getting a mini-suite on it as opposed to a regular balcony on the other ship that would seem to be a good deal.
Have a great next cruise on RCL's Jewel of the Seas.
