Hi, I was wondering if anyone has ever taken gifts, and what advice would you have on this? Candy? Soap? toys? ???? Also when and where would you do this?
Thanks |

When we were in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, we went on an excursion which included a stop at a very small school. We took coloring books and small, boxes of crayons with 8 crayons each. We also took some cheesy postcards and small touristy items that we got at our local Wal-Mart. The children LOVED them and they didn't take up much space in our luggage. We were their best friends for the day and it made us feel great!

It's very nice of you to think about bringing gifts. But, unless you've had some prior contact with an orphanage or social service agency in one of the ports-of-call, I'd leave them at home. If you encounter an organization you're impressed with when in a particular port, a gift of pesos or US$ will be appreciated and put to good use. People offering gifts to children in some of the Mexican port cities are sometimes looked upon suspiciously and I doubt you'd want to be misunderstood.

Thank you for the tips. We wondered about coloring books and crayons. Yes I guess it makes sense to support with money, if we don't have a contact.
Maybe less bartering or extra tips would be good. Thankyou Last edited by merinski; November 23rd, 2009 at 02:09 AM. |

In the past we have visited schools and donated articles like books, pencils etc. Since that was during a tour the school was contacted before that visit.
But maybe you can contact one of these foundations in Puerto vallarta and see what they might need: http://vallarta-info.com/puerto-vallarta-notices.html Also please donot buy from children in the streets. For a better future they should be at school, not selling articles. That way you support them (and the parents) in the wrong way.

Hi Ine,
I'll bet your getting ready for your annual trek to warm and sunny Puerto Vallarta. Hope you have a great time. We're leaving on Carnival Spirit in a few days, and then again on Mariner Of The Seas in February. Our annual week in Cabo will probably be in late May or early June next year.
