Bugs in Denali

Has anyone any experience of bugs in Denali this year?

We will be there in the middle of August and are wondering how far it is advisable to go into the park.

We drove to Denali the first week of July and had a picnic on the way up. The bugs were BAD. We put on repellant immediately and they were still flying around but did not land on us. Several people in Anchorage told me that the bugs were especially bad this year. I don't know how they will be in mid-August but I would definitely take insect repellant.

Yes, the bugs are especially bad this year due to another very warm summer in Alaska. We had several days last summer in Denali when the temps reached the 80's.

The Tundra Wilderness tour is the preferred but if you haven't booked it already you may have a problem.

The bugs last week weren't bad at all as far as the Toklat River (where the TWT ends), but beyond that they got worse and worse and were quite bad at Kantishna.

The bugs were VERY bad in Denali and Talkeetna this year. We were there on July 6, 7, and 8.

We went in as far at Kantishna, and yes they were bad. Do not stop moving if you do not have bug spray on. With the spray on, they did not bug us that much. We were there July 16 & 17.
