how to get to town from Monaco port

Can you walk from the cruise ship port into town? We want to do some walking and maybe use public buses.

The answer is Yes with a qualification. Monte Carlo is not a large city, but parts of it are very hilly. You can easily walk (assuming you have no mobility issues) from the cruise ship pier (or tender pier) into the heart of downtown (the port is actually downtown) but you would probably want to use a local bus or taxi if you intend to go up the hill to the Palace.

There are also elevators located at certain points to take you up to the town from the port. They are hard to find put they are there. I found them on a map provided by the Monaco tourist bureau. If you contact them before you leave they will mail a package to you.

Thiese are the locations of the public elevators. If you stop at the Tourist Bureau when you arrive and obtain a map you will be able to find the public elevators. They save a lot of up hill walking. This is the site where you can can get some good info.

Public Elevators

There are several elevators and travelators in Monaco making it easier to walk up and down the Principality's steep hills.

The moving walkways are located:

between the Place des Moulins and the beaches

between the Princess Grace Hospital Centre and the Exotic Garden

between the harbour and Avenue de la Costa

between the Place St. Dévote and the area of Monéghetti

between the Terraces of the Casino, the Congress Centre Auditorium and the Boulevard Louis II

between the Avenue des Citronniers and the Avenue Grande-Bretagne

between the highway and the Larvotto Boulevard

Sure. In fact, if you like to walk you can actually walk just about anywhere in Monte Carlo. But we have seen many cruise ship passengers who have trouble walking from one bar to another (on the ship) so the real answer depends on your personal mobility.

We are tendering in Monte Carlo next month. In looking at some of the maps I've seen on these boards and on other sites, I'm a little confused as to where that puts us in relation to things once we get off the tender. We will be mostly walking in Monaco. There are four of us with no mobility issues and in good to very good shape. I have a rough plan as to where we want to go, I'm just not quite sure where that starting point is from the tenders.

Thanks

Our Holland America ship docked in Monte Carlo. It was a very hard and long to walk to the Casino area. But about 100 yards from our ship was a small water taxi that took us right to a dock below the Casino area. So walked just walked another 100 yards to an elevator right up to the Casino level. The water taxi ran every 25 minutes or so.

If you like to walk as we do you can easily walk from the pier into town including getting over to the area near the grand casino which is about a 30 minute walk. We walk to all of the attractions when we are there including the area near the grand casino, the palace, cathedral and other adjacent areas, the outdoor areas with the cactuses, the oceanaire museum just to mention a few places. For some you need to take the elevator or the steps (steps are fine for us). You can also take a taxi if some of the walking bothers you but if you like to walk you can get to all of the major sites by foot.

If you are there in the spring or fall it's an added plus because of the nice weather. In the middle of the summer it will be hot and humid. Still walkable but just hot.

That's just what we want to do - I'm just trying to get a perspective on where to start, as I'm not sure where we actually get off the tender. I think I'd like to head to the palace area first, see the old town, the cathedral, and eventually make our way to the casino area for a late lunch at the Cafe de Paris before going to the casino. Is this doable?

Yes, from the tender drop off you can go to the palace and I would also visit the cathedral and you can also walk around the nearby streets with stores and cafes. There are also outside gardens nearby as well. The walk over to the Casino area is about 30 minutes. It's also fun to people watch outside the casino area, and also see some of the very expensive cars parked nearby. There are also some high end stores and nice hotels.

To add to the previous statements:

Use the public bus system as often as possible. A 24-hr tourist card is just € 3 per person and you can use it unlimited times during the day in port. The "bateau bus", which was described as taxi boat, is actually part of the public transport system and included in those € 3.

Tickets can be purchased with the driver or on the bus boat.

The routing of all bus lines is indicated in the official city map, available in the port building, or online at visitmonaco.com or cam.mc.

Another idea would be hop-on / hop-off bus, an open-air, commented excursion bus leaving directly from the tender pier / cruise ship pier. It will take you ALL over town, has 12 official stops and will be € 17 for a day, with as many rides as you like. To take one full tour without leaving the bus is just a little over 1 hour.

Enjoy your stay in this very pedestrian-friendly country.
