Food on the Costa Mediterranea

We'll be on Mediterranea Feb 4 - 16 and I'll review the food and post lots of pictures, though it'll be too late if you're all going on the 16th.

Anyway, I've been on three Costa ships plus a couple of Carnival cruises and I think the food was just about identical on both when the itinerary is out of Miami/Ft.Lauderdale.

Chandler Services such as Costco, Metro and the Appollo Group, not to forget CCL's own huge kitchen and catering services run out of Miami do all the meals on-shore. Most cruise ships are just heat-and-serve operations. Everything is cut and bagged for the ship galleys. Much of the baking is flash frozen and then baked on-board.

Go to the Hospitality Conventions and you can see how restaurants, hotels and cruise ships get their menu ideas.

It's been a few years since I've been on Carnival so it's possible things have changed. Costa does buy a few items from specialty Italian suppliers like olive oil and balsamic vinegar on every table. They may also customise what they get from the regular suppliers for European tastes- different sauces, al dente pasta, MUCH smaller portion sizes than Carnival, etc.

What did your travel agent tell you that caused you to book Costa? If they're a competent agent, they know you better than we do.

There are unfortunately a lot of incompetent and downright dishonest agents out there. I recently talked to a couple, the (Internet telephone) agent instead of saying "I don't know, if it's important to you, I'll find out before I take the booking" gave them totally wrong information. And I recently had a supposed cruise specialist tell me the dance floors on Mediterranea are all tile. So if you let us know what you were told we can tell you if your expectations are reasonable.
