For Australian Scotch drinkers, I don't know about other spirits, it's cheaper to buy on the ship than in discount liquor stores in Australia.
As an example a 1L Johnnie Walker Red Label on board is $37 including 15% tip. At 1st Choice Liquor in Australia the same bottle is $54. |

I have brought liquor on board every cruise. Never a problem. I wouldn't bother but the selection of available quality tequila and single malts is poor on board.

Being Canadians, the liquor onboard purchases are fair enough to us.We appreciate being able to take wine and champagne aboard to enjoy in our room. Most generous allowance that we know of on any cruise ship in our price level so we have no problem paying their prices when we want something in the public areas. ..and hey! Now that we've discovered the happy hours, we've got all the drinking we want to purchase in a day covered at decent prices.

funny you should ask! We have always brought booze on board...never had a problem! What's funny is that last fall on the Odam one of our bags ended up in the "Naughty Room"......I was positive we'd been busted! Went down to identify our bag. Three or four security guards surrounded us as we opened it. I offered the info that there was a jug of vodka in there. A Guard picks it up, looks for something else, finds a power strip, confiscates that, puts the jug back into the bag and tells us to have a nice cruise!!!

HAL allows you to carry as many bottles on board as you want of these items. Some people take on cases.

It's not worth the trouble of smuggling. Prices are very competitive. Why trouble yourself?

find that on board prices are reasonable but for those of us from discount states we find them high. Florida has many discount chains like Total, ABC and the big box stores.

Liquor prices vary widely by State. Florida liquor prices are at least 50% higher than in CA. Since you can't bring liquor in a carry on and I would never pack liquor in my checked luggage, the prices on HAL don't seem as outrageous as I originally thought.

We just got off the Westy's Hawaii/South Pacific cruise.
I took a full bottle of Absinthe & 6 travel bottles. The full bottle was w me for carry on and the travels were in the checked luggage. All made it on board and 5 of the 6 travels & 2/3rd the full bottle came home with us. We're not heavy drinkers by any mean, Absinthe is a great night cap. HAL doesn't sell Absinthe, if they did you can bet they'd bleed you dry like the prices they have for everything else. Derek |
