Default Melk Abbey

Is the abbey a walkable distance from the dock? We would prefer to walk if possible.

It is walkable but uphill getting to it if I remember correctly. Lots of folks walked down from the Abbey through the town, you might consider riding up and then walking down and back to the ship.

Google Maps lists the walk at 1.4 km 18 min., with walking in the road. As I remember it, it is fairly sharply uphill. See this MAP.

We just got back from visiting Melk Abbey last month. We took the bus trip to the abbey included with our tours and then had a very pleasant walk back to the ship afterwards. It's a very nice way to do it since it allows you plenty of time to see everything.

Thanks for the replies. We are cruising with TUI and the tours are not included. We thought maybe we could walk up the hill or grab a taxi and tour around on our own. Would this be recommended or is a tour a better way to see the abbey.

When we were there last year there was a tourist train ran from the dock to the abbey & also a stop in town I think is was 1 price & you could do the stops on the same ticket
I seem to remember it was about 3 Euro pp ..we did not use it as our tour was included

When we were there on our Viking cruise, we rode up and had a very nice walk down through the town. Saw no need for a taxi.

We were there last month and we took the included bus ride up and I took the bus back down. My husband walked down and he is a fast walker and it took him 30 minutes walking through the wooded trail. I did not see any taxis. I would not be comfortable walking up the road since it has turns and traffic. You need to consider how long the boat is docked at Melk. We had a window of time to see the Abbey and then to get back before sailing.

Yes, it's definitely walkable. I was there in late July, and walked from the abbey back to the boat. Melk is a charming town and I was really glad I did the walk rather than taking the bus.

Is a tour recommended or is it just as easy to wander about on your own or with a self-guided tour?
