Default Nohoch Kay vs. Almaplena Beach

We are traveling to Costa Maya in January 2013. Having trouble deciding between Nohoch Kay and Almaplena. We'll have two adults and three children ages 9, 6, and 3 (this day will actually be our 8yo's birthday, so it needs to be FUN).

Has also considered Maya Chan but they are booked for a wedding that day.

Possibility of grandparents coming with us (they will be on cruise as well, but sometimes don't like to much sun).

Any thoughts appreciated!!

Sorry, I don't have an answer but would like to know which day it was sold out. We are trying to make the same decisions for 4 people in January. Thanks

I can't comment on Almaplena Beach. It opened late last year, but early reviews were good. I think they were tightening down their cancellation policy according to a post on this board.

But we love Jaime and crew at Nohoch Kay. Great food. Great drinks. Great beach. They take excellent care of their guests. and if just sitting on the beach or on their patio isn't quite your thing, you can walk up and down the malecon and shop (or get pestered by the lounger hawkers and craft sellers from other places, Jaime keeps them away).
Easy taxi ride.

There have been several recent post below yours with reviews within those post of several people that have been to Almaplena since they opened in January. So far, the reviews have been great. However, I guess it would depend on what your children like to do and what they consider "having fun" is. I know that the snorkeling at Almaplena has been reported to be fantastic. Do they like to snorkel? People have reported that it is a very relaxing and quiet beach.

We considered Almaplena but I cannot be in the sun too much. Looked everywhere for pictures to see shady opportunities at that resort. The grass umbrellas offer limited shade. There is also a big drop off (could have been from a storm) that would make for a challenge getting in and out from the water.
They told me I could stay in the restaurant, so thought I needed to find another place where I would have shade and be on the beach

How did you hear about this? I don't believe I've ever read this yet and was just wondering. How far out is the drop off?
