I read Beverly Sellars' They Called Me Number One over the last couple of days. Be prepared to cry. Sellars is a former chief, lawyer and activist from Soda Creek, BC. This is her story about her life as a small child sent first to the Sardis hospital though she wasn't ill and then to Indian Residential School. Her heartwarming memories of home are juxtaposed jarringly against the nightmare of her life in these prisons and the effects of this cultural experience over several generations. She is a woman of great courage. If you live in Canada, the US or Australia, this is a must read for insight into why first people mistreatment and resulting tragedy have been so hard to overcome.

I read 3 on my recent British Isles cruise on the Caribbean Princess - all set in the region:

Me Before You by Jojo Moyles - enjoyed it

'Tis by Frank Mc Court - highly recommend, especially if you read Angela's Ashes. This is the follow up to that book. Loved it.

Trafficked by Sophie Hayes. This was tough; I almost bailed out it was so difficult to read at points, but I'm glad I finished it.

If you love George Martin, you should give The Steel Queen, first book of the "Silk and Steel Saga" a whirl, the whole series was addictive, couldn't put it down!!! Very "Game of Thrones"ish"!!!

Underboss Sammy the Bull gravano's Story of life in the Mafia.
