Keep reading comments about how bad second hand smoke on Carnival is. Especially near the casino and how smoke travels from there to other areas. Have a Magic cruise booked in 2018. concerned a bit. Where can people smoke?? Is it really bad? We have kids and I myself cant stand it.

Can't speak for the Magic specifically but except around the casino (which is bad) and if accidentally walking around the side of the deck they are allowed to smoke on I haven't noticed it. Unless you are like super super super sensitive you should be fine. I have COPD and it only bothered me when I had to walk down the hallway next to the casino to get to other spots on the ship. Then it was just the smell. I didn't like start coughing or anything.

we are non-smokers and can be very sensitive to smoke. we've been on 6 carnival cruises and we have not had a problem at most anywhere on the ships. sure, the casino may have some smoke but what casino doesn't? i think carnival and most all other cruise lines have done a great job of balancing the greater concern with second hand smoke yet still allowing smokers to smoke in designated areas.

I have asthma and live in California where you are not allowed to smoke anywhere!(for the most part)

We have been on lots of Carnival cruises and just avoid the casino most of the time. We have not had trouble with smoke anywhere else.

I reiterate the comments about the casino- the problem there is stale cigarette smoke smell, in my opinion. It can spread a bit but you can always get away from it.

But the biggest issue I have is people who insist on smoking on their balcony, even though it's not allowed and they know that... I am a 'don't make waves' kinda person most of the time, but if my neighbors are smoking on their balcony I'll tell them once to please stop, as it's against the regulations. If they don't, or if they do it again, I'll rat them out to Guest Services in a heartbeat! I didn't pay for a balcony upgrade to deal with rude rule breakers!

I second that. We had that problem on the 2nd leg of our B2B on Triumph and after 2 times of GS telling them to quit they finally told them they would be fined. That put a stop to it but then we listened to them complain the rest of the cruise about how we ruined their cruise. Gee what about ours. :rolleyes:We paid extra for a balcony so we could use it. I don't hesitate to report them. They have the whole casino and one side of a deck so it's not like they don't have any other options. But don't get me started.

I agree, Cloud9... I never got a balcony while smoking was allowed out there for that very reason- when it was allowed, it wasn't right for me to complain about them smoking where they were permitted to do so... I'd never sit down beside someone in the casino and complain about their cigarette- I know it's one of the places they're allowed to smoke, so if I have a problem with it, it's my problem not theirs.

But since they stopped allowing smoking on the balcony, I'm quite within my rights to do something about it. My last cruise, the balcony next door became the hub for 3 or 4 cabins of people cruising together- everyone else was in an interior cabin so they all smoked out there. I said something loudly to my husband the first time that cigarettes aren't allowed on the balcony. They put them out. An hour later, they lit up again. This time I actually called out over the balcony divider and asked them to please not smoke on the balcony. A few grumbled but they put them out.

The next day, they did it again, so I called GS and they sent our steward to talk to them... they outright lied to him that they weren't smoking, while there was a glass on the table half full of water and wet cigarette butts. He told them that this was their last warning, and next time someone complained, they'd be fined.

The worst of it was, later that day I spoke to the woman whose cabin was taken over by her family/friends and she apologized, saying she didn't even smoke, and hated all the cigarettes around her but was too intimidated to say anything.

I put a post it note on the stateroom door of my balcony neighbor politely stating the non smoking policy and said nothing more. I can tolerate smoke but they lived on their balcony and pretty much smoked what seemed to be every single time we enjoyed our balcony. They had no idea if it was us or the stateroom on their other side as I did not sign my name or room number. No more smoke issue but my beautiful door decor was stolen. hmmmm?

the only place on board that smoke has bothered me has been in the casino, after about 3pm on. I think it is fairly easy to avoid the smoking areas outside, if you know already that it is only allowed on one side, in certain areas only. I happen to enjoy the casino, so it has become a problem for me to spend time in there in the evenings due to excessive smoke. I have not ever had the "pleasure" of a balcony cabin, so cant speak to that issue. With the exception of the casino, I have not had a problem with smoke on Carnival.

Is smoking still allowed on one side of the pool area on Carnival ships? I remember getting a severe allergic reaction to the smoke because I had no idea one side was ok for smoking in the tables area around the pool and it only just takes a little for me to start turning red and itchy. That's the only other place I ever remember having trouble with it.

The casino and one section of the top deck (above Lido if memory serves) will be smoking. You should study the ship deck plans because passing thru the casino is a main way to travel front to back - the dining room blocks on 3 and 4 if I recall correctly. So you will need to go higher or lower to avoid it.

On some ships and I think Magic is one I had issues walking the track because the smokers were below on one section.

On Magic now- the casino is awful but if you walk quickly and hold your breath you only have to breathe once. I've made it through on one breath. Obviously I won't be gambling there :'). Not much smoking on deck. I've only smelled it twice and I'm on a B2B.

We were on the Magic last December and will sail her again this December and then 1st week of April...the casino area was horrible, but that being said, it is horrible in the casino on every CCL ship we have sailed!

The Magic does have an advantage with the outside promenade/lanai deck that runs around the outside of the casino deck, you can go outside to walk around the casino and then come back in. Or, if it is easier, go up or down one deck and come down the stairway at a different point not near the casino.

We have had a balcony or suite on last 5 cruises and the upcoming ones as well, it has been a couple years since we have had a balcony smoker (not just cigarettes) so we feel it has really improved. If you do run into a balcony smoker just report it to GS until they do something as suggested by a previous poster.

If you book a balcony cabin, make sure it's on starboard side. (Odd numbered cabins)

The port side of the Lanai (deck 5) allows smoking.

It is always bad in the casino. Depending on the layout of the ship, I can usually smell smoke in the atrium or walking around near the Fun Shops. I've also noticed it wafting into the main theater.

I agree; the smokers on the balcony are getting worse. This last trip I had to call GS three times and it did no good. Even the morning we docked back in Miami they were out there puffing away. I also noticed a lot of blue cards on this last trip and I saw people smoking in all sorts of wrong places. After a while, I just gave up pointing out where the smoking sections were. :(

Casino's in Illinois are smoke free and still hugely popular and busy. As a former smoker, I think I am a bit more sensitive. I also like to play in the casino when cruising. Never fails.... I'll be in a smoke free corner feeding a slot machine and someone will come to the machine next to me and light up. If I am not winning, I will usually relocate. If winning, I will suck it up and deal with it. The casinos on board do tend to draw the smokers.

We were on the Dream in January, and the only places I noticed much of a smoke smell was in the smoking areas. I'm a non-smoker and I don't like smelling smoke, but I don't fake cough and wave my hand in front of my face when walking through a smoking area. I just go through it as quickly as I can. We're not gamblers so not spending time in the casino is no big deal to us.

We had a balcony room on deck 7, starboard side, and I did smell smoke occasionally when I was out on our balcony but...I'm not sure if it was coming from a nearby balcony or if it was wafting upwards from the smoking area on the lanai on deck 5 as we were pretty much directly above it. My mistake in not knowing that when I booked.

But I never noticed any smoke in areas where people shouldn't be smoking.

Of the cruise lines/ships I've been on (certainly not as many as some here), I'd rank Carnival the "worst", followed by RCL (#2) and then MSC (Divina- #1), when it comes to smoke. Where Divina is the best in this regard, IMO.

Both Carnival and RCL had extremely smoky casinos, but on the 2 Carnival ships, the smoke goes up the stairwells and we could smell it several floors away (ugh). RCL must've had better airflow in that regard. MSC was an anomaly in that their US-based ship (Currently only Divina) has no smoking in the casino. Only in the cigar lounge and a certain section of one of the outdoor bars by the Yacht Club restaurant. One of the few things we liked about MSC. It was nice to be able to gamble without getting lunge cancer and having my eyes red and watery and sore throat for several days. Although perhaps that's why we hardly saw anyone in the Casino? Or could've been the predominantly European crowd? I don't know.

However, one thing that seemed common for all 3 lines (at least the ships we've been on):

For some reason it seems that either the only (or quickest) way to get to/from the theaters is through the Casino. On MSC this was no problem. But on RCL/Carnival it was a challenge to hold your breath while you went through the fog of smoke, although then your clothes reeked of it afterwards. On both RCL/Carnival even on debarkation when the casino was closed, the lounge areas/walkways outside the casino still had the stench of smoke in there. It was awful waiting for 20 minutes there (on Carnival) to debark.

I think maybe if they had doors to the Casino to keep the smoke in one area, then perhaps the filtration system could do a better job, I don't know. Then again I'm super sensitive to cigarette smoke. Cigar bothers me even more. Ironically the smell of a pipe I don't mind, but I can count on one hand how many people I've even been around that smoked a pipe (tobacco --haha) in my entire life.

And I don't hate smokers (or really anyone). I just really cannot stand the smell of the smoke and it really messes with my allergies, sinuses, eyes/nose/throat.

It is universal on Carnival (all ships) that smoking is welcomed in the casino and the areas around the casino. Be aware that evening entertainment occurs daily in the casino area. So if you are sensitive to smoke, that area will likely be off-limits to you for the entire cruise. Yes, Carnival has smoking rules that limit smoking in that area, but I can tell you from many years of being a Carnival customer that smoking rules are not enforced. The notion of established smoking and non-smoking slot machines in the casino is not enforced and smokers smoke when and where they want to in the whole casino area. Since Carnival banned cabin balcony smoking, smoke in the casino and surrounding areas has only been exacerbated because smokers make their way to the casino and surrounding areas to smoke because they can't smoke on their balconies. That has resulted in that whole area only being smokier.

So if cigarette smoke is an issue for you in the entire casino area, you'd be much happier on a line that forbids cigarette smoking in and around the casino, such as Celebrity.

I hope you find a cruise that provides the quality product you enjoy the most. We all deserve to enjoy our vacations. Hope yours is memorable.
