Newport in the evening?

We will be in Newport from 11am-11pm with the Maasdam May 1. We have our day planned, a 90-minute tour of the city, and then public transportation to see the Breakers, Marble House and the Cliff Walk. I'm sure we can find other things to do if there's more time during the day.

I'm looking for safe and interesting things to do that evening -- would hate to just go back to the ship and waste port time. It will be our first time in Newport.

Newport at night is wonderful, here are some options as I am not sure exactly what you are looking to do.

1. If available, go to Providence and see Waterfire. Recently voted one of the top 10 events by night in the world, this event is a must do if in RI when available. http://www.waterfire.org/season-schedule/2012-waterfire-schedule yes, you would have to arrange transportation north to the city (40 minute ride to the city) but it starts at sunset so you could be in the city for dinner, watch the lightnings, and be back on 95S by 830PM, in Newport for 915PM without issue. There was a water taxi, not sure if it is still running. Check out the Waterfire page for schedule.

the Naval War College, Officers Club, MWR, etc. offers many events right on the base, especially at night. The dining is great!

have an eclipse coffee milk (buy some to take home!), a Dels lemonde, and you have to find a New York System / Hot Weiner restaurant in Newport and order "3 all the way!" You have been warned! (gaggas, hot weiner, etc.) Wash it all down with a Newport Creamery Awful Awful, some chowda and clam cakes!

I really appreciate your help. Speaking of Thames Street, how far is it from the pier? From looking at my map, it looks close by. We're used to walking long distances, I assume this is walkable from the ship?

Thames St is approximately 500 feet due east from the tender dock (not pier). It would be less than a 5 minute walk from the tender dock.

Thames street is right along the water. If starting at one end and going all the way to the other, including the piers, side streets, Brick Markets and inside large buildings for shopping, it would take up your whole day! Lots of nice shops and other stores for a bite to eat. If shopping is your thing, this is the place. Some local stores, some chain stores. Mostly they are not chain stores though.

I'm really looking forward to our first visit to Newport, and that we'll have nearly 12 hours there. We like to make the most of our time in port, especially places that are new to us.

What newport is most famous for....SAILING....go to Bowen's Wharf and take a sunset sail on one of our beautiful sailing vessels, the madeline,Aurora, or if sailing is not your thing we havea restored prohibition era "speed boat", it is called the RUM RUNNER, it will take you out into the harbor and around to your cruise ship...also while you are in the Bowen's Wharf area , there are a few resturants: try some some upscale mexican at Diego's or a bowl of chowder at the BLACK PEARL, or want a VG STEAK go to 22 BOWENS (up scale pricey) or walk from there to the MOORINGS, good seafod and a large bar area, like SBS said walk down Americas cup to Thames and eat at the RED PARROT, keep walking down Thames and shop and shop snad shop, TAKE a SEGWAY TOUR, can book thru your ship, they take up to the MANSIONS and all around OCEAN DRIVE, go to a neighborhood bar/ resturant on THAMES , called OBREIN's eat out on the patio, watch the people go by, take in a live band at the NEWPORT BLUES CAFE, have a brew at the PELHAM, stop by PIER 49 at the Newport Harbor HOTEL..(also great place to see the sunset,besides the top deck of your ship), and if you want the name of a NATIVE NEWPOTER who runs a great tour pm me....it is a true gem...hope ths helps!

I think the poster asked for night time activities; while the response in message no. 2 provided a long list of activities, unfortunately most of these activities can only be done in the day time. Then Water Fire while really neat is usually presented on Saturday nights.

All that said there are still things to do in Newport in the evenings (I know I live there). Do as another poster said and walk on Thames St. and pick a real good restaurant for a lovely dinner (Bouchard's, Tallulah's, 22 Bowen's Wharf, Black Pearl, The Moorings, Scales and Shells). Your ship will anchor out in the harbor opposite Goat Island and you'll be tendered to Peroitti Park, which sits on America's Cup Ave. Thames St runs parallel to America's Cup Ave, maybe 100 feet further west. After dinner grab a coffee at the little coffee shop out on the pier just behind The Black Pearl for the best view in Newport, even better come here at sunset before dinner and watch the sun set over the Newport Bridge.

Newport is a pretty safe town to walk around, morning, noon, and night.

We plan to walk and browse along Thames St. that evening. We'll probably be kind of tired after a full day of sight-seeing, so I think this sounds really nice, and a good way to work off all the wonderful Newport food we'll be sampling. :)

This is all within close walking distance from where the tender drops you off as noted. It will be relatively quiet in Newport when you are there -- a weekday before tourist season. It can be cool and breezy in May with the winds off the still cold Atlantic and Narragansett Bay.

Watching the sunset over the boats and Jamestown is beautiful -- which should be about 7p.m. when you are there. Surprisingly not too many downtown Newport restaurants offer harborfront dining with a view of the sunset, but if you land inside at that time, try The Mooring (fine dining) for a window table (suggest reservations if you want a window table). If you are outside, go to the end of Bannister's Wharf to overlook the harbor.

If the sunset isn't part of that planning and you want a more casual dinner, The Red Parrot on the corner of Thames and Memorial Blvd. is good. There are other great choices for fine dining as cruiseri posted, including a few others that are a 5 to 10 minute ride -- Castle Hill Inn or The Spiced Pear, though I don't think you need to venture out of the downtown area. It really depends on what you are in the mood for and what your budget is.

I'm a native Rhode Islander who lives "across the bay" and I have a family member who works in the hospitality business in Newport. I spend a lot of time there year round -- but more so when music fills the air in the summer.

I think our evening is planned, we'll stroll along America's Cup Ave. and Thames St. and have dinner at the Red Parrot. It all sounds lovely. We'll be prepared for the chill, bringing lots of layers! :D

enjoy our fair "city by the sea", if sunset is what you want...take a a sunset tour on one of our boats...

there is also a very nice out side patio bar on Goat Island, called Pineaples by the sea, it is at the Hotel, it over looks the bay, has a great outdoor fireplace , you can watch the "bay go by" see your ship and enjoy an unforgettable sunset...BUT, if the Red Parrot is your dinner choise ENJOY....

We will be in Newport in june. Is it easy to get to the cliff walk fron the pier

It is about 1.5 miles from the tender dock to the start at the north end Cliff Walk. Unfortunately there are 2 ways fo getting to the start: shanks mare or a taxi.

The alternative would be to take a bus that would drop you at a stop where you would have a short walk to CW but you would be intersecting CW about .7 miles from the start but you would not miss any of the mansions.

You could pick the bus up at the Newport Visitor Center located about one block noirth of the tender dock. You would use a route #67 bus both outbound and ibound; there is a schedule here.

Just ask the bus driver to drop you at the closest stop to CW which is the intersection of Narragansett Ave and Ochre Point Ave.

It wouldn't take too long to walk, although it is uphill on the way. Still, it's pleasant. You would also walk right past St. Mary's - the church JFK and Jackie were married at. I just did the walk myself an hour ago!

Although Newport is a Great City, we are just begining to "get the season started", most of the shops close at 700pm, the resturants and bars stay open late, the "dinner train" is run on Friday/saturday night. This the first time a ship will be here past the normal departure time, You will have a Great day in town. the bars will be the only night activity that you will see, unless you get a cab and take a night time drive down Bellevue and see the mansions at night....
