European ports of call/money exchange

We are taking our first European Cruise in April. It's a 27 day Princess Cruise with several ports of call. Do we need to get local currency in each Country, or will US dollars work for cab drivers, meals, etc. in Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Estonia, Ireland, Scotland etc.

Thanks

Welcome to Cruise Critic.

US Dollars are about as likely to work in these countries as if someone handed Russian currency to a cab driver here in the US. What many people do is obtain foreign currency at ATM machines in the foreign country; that tends to give the best rates. If you have a Capital One card you will not pay any fees and get great exchange rates. The ship often can exchange currency, but you will pay an unfavorable rate. Likewise your local bank likely has currency exchange services, but again you will pay for this service.

We found it very easy to get different currencys for each port we would visit onboard as there were several..may not be the best rate but with such small amounts needed it was easier than looking for ATM's and amounted to very little difference..We also used our Capital One credit card when we could...

Also check with the bank you use for your debit card. They may have cooperative agreements with banks that reduce extra charges. I know that by doing that I was able to use ATM's in England and Scotland without ATM fees (just conversion fees, not both). In Ireland I had to pay fees...but also got the best exchange rates.
