Table for two

We have a second dinner seating with a table for four, however, we would prefer a table for two. Is it easy to get switched to a table for two and when is the best time to make this request?

Well you didn´t mention what ship you are on, but usually there are not too much tables for two available in the dining room. When boarding the ship you should see the Maitre D´ as soon as he is available to request your wish. He takes the requests usually at embarkation time and his schedule is posted in the Cruise compass. You can also get the information from the pursers desk.
It might be that if he is able to change you at all that you are stuck with your table of four for the first night, as the changes sometimes are not possible for the first night.
Give it a try but don´t let it ruin your cruise expreience. Have fun.

It is easier to get a table for 2 at second seating - but be careful what you wish for!
A table for 2 is not all it's cracked up to be, in my opinion. On our cruise, we thought it would be romantic and asked for a table for 2. They were very accomodating, but we felt very neglected throughout the cruise. The head waiter spent most of his time at his larger tables, and only rushed by us on his way there. Our assistant waiter was a little more attentive, but we still had to call him over from the larger tables when we needed something. We ended up only eating in the dining room 4 out of the 7 nights, and next time will definitely get a larger table.

We also prefer a table for two and all the previous posts demonstrate why we prefer the freestyle dining on other cruise lines. If you can't get the table you want in one dining room, you have other options. Our experience has always been that the service is better on a table for two and much slower on a large table because people come at different times, some order drinks and others don't, some can't make up their minds regarding the menu. We don't want to spend two hours sitting in the dining room when we could spend some of that time dancing. To each his own.
