Review of Cruise from November 1 to November 7 2014

Norwegian Getaway

This is my review of my experience on the Norwegian Getaway.

Sailed on Nov 1 2014 as a solo cruise, male

booked a balcony room.

This being my 2nd ocean liner cruise, 1st was in Europe a few years back on Louis cruises on smaller cruiseship. So first time on a large ship with many amenities.

This cruise was out of Miami with ports being St. Maarten, St. Thomas and Nassau.

So start of first day was very exciting. Getting on this big ship for first time. Overall good experience. would sail with NCL again.

I thought food was good, but way way better in the sit down restaurants. Buffet was good, but what took away from that was the contact cattle herd of passengers there all the time, not the cruise company fault at all, it is what is it.

Yes pool was small, but then again you have to look at the big water park nearby. Lots of slides so that overrides that. I think all cruiseships have different features then others. Stateroom. I had a balcony. Awesome, loved the views, bed was so comfortable. Cabin steward dude was so amazing and knew everyone by first name. Left funny animal shape towels in room.

Will definitely take a cruise with a smaller amount of passengers.

We will also try and go to Nassau again to. at least will make the attempt.

In short NCL is Fantastic.

Food was Fantastic., Crew was Absolutely great. Entertainment Excellent

St martin beaches were beautiful,

Did a taxi ride around the island was interesting. St Thomas was beautiful, and ride to top in cablecar very nice provided awesome view.

On ship I did the rock climbing wall, was great. Did the ropes course, with the zip line and walk the plank parts. Did the basketball court. As well ran on running track every morning.

Casino was lots of fun. Good selection of slots and tables. It is too bad they allow smoking on the ship though.

One complaint is the music in general areas was total crap!!!. the top 20 songs over and over again. No need to hear Rihanna on a cruiseship. Thank you very much.

Overall Would sail again with NCL. Would do a different ship and different route just to mix things up and look for a new experience.

  • 2 weeks later...

hi yes Getaway was quite solo friendly. i traveled it as a solo as well

They do have meet and greets for solos on this ship as well, if you wish to check out

NCL doesn't charge single supplements

also they have solo person rooms called Studios if your interested in that as well

so go ahead and book

I'm thinking of going on Getaway as a solo male passenger and was wondering if this ship has the same solo friendly space and activities as Epic that I read about? This will be my first time cruising.

It does. At 5:30 (I think) the Studio lounge is opened for other solos on the ship to meet up for mingle / dinner organizing at the Studio lounge.

I've travelled solo on the Epic and on the Sun, and will be solo on Getaway too.... I found each of the past experiences quite fun.

Yes the shows were reserved, as they do get filled up. The shows on that ship were legally Blond and the ballroom dancing show, think it was called Burn the Floor, the magic show, is done every day which i think u can just walk in

but if u really want to see those shows, i suggest reserve now.

The shows are reserved, but not the seating. You're guaranteed a seat, but the choice of seats is first come, first served.

Since you are solo I wouldn't bother booking anything! You can show up about 15 minutes before the performance and you can get in. Seats are not reserved so when you find one, sit down.

I would also suggest you join your ROLL CALL you can get to know some other cruisers with you, and perhaps find other solo cruisers. ALSO be sure to go every night to the solo cruisers meeting!! You will have opportunity to go with the group to dinner, find others to go on excursions with and of course go to specialty restaurants with others. The Solo Cruiser Crew Coordinator will be able to make reservations.

Just a word of advice, don't sit in your cabin and be afraid to go out!! Get out there, do some activities and above all HAVE A GREAT TIME!!

Thanks for the great advice.

I would like to book the shows but need to decide which showtime is better - earlier or later.

I do plan to attend most of the solo cruisers' meetings, but I also want to just relax, read a book and have some "me-time."

Just got back and Burn the Floor sure is not ballroom dancing:eek: Those dancers truly burned up the floor. How in God's world they maintained that pace through the show, I don't know:eek: They all got so sweaty from the non stop fast pace. The shows are indeed reserved in order to space out seating for all, and the shows are more than once to prevent influx of people at any one performance. I think it was at 7ish and 10ish for 2 nights. They scan your S&S card to verify a seat for you. Seating is random once you are verified.

I never made it to the Illusionarium for the magic show, unless I'm mistaken, it's a pay thing because of a meal. I'll check my schedule today when my mind and body synchronize later to be sure.

It's funny how each person's perspective of a cruise is different. I just got back on the 22nd as a solo older cruiser. I've never encountered such a huge buffet area. The foods were far more than I anticipated. There are so many food stations with food type groupings, then turn the corner and the whole thing is repeated again. There are so many places to sit inside, outside and others in between. The problem is so many hit that first area off the aft elevator drop off. Continue onto the next stations around the corner and it's not busy. By the way, at the main entry areas, there are 8 sinks to literally wash your hands without touching a thing, yes it's all automated.

Not sure what music was crap. It's piped in and not wild. Many times it was live music by the pool for adults. That's when the pool was crowded. It was a decent sized pool for a ship, and except for hot days or adult party time, the pool sat there empty.

As for casino smoke, it was minimal and barely detectable even walking through. I had to hunt for the smoking section for the slots.
