Review...Monarch...January 30, 2012

Recommended Posts

A little info....I live in Canada and my GF lives in Orlando, FL. While I have cruised with RCI many times and am Diamond C&A, my GF had never cruised so I took her on her very first cruise last December aboard Monarch. We had such a great time and she couldn't stop raving about it after we got home so we decided to organize a group cruise for part of her family.

There were 7 of us this time and, beside my GF and I, our group included my GF's 16 year old DD, 12 year old DD, Brother, SIL, and Mother.

I made all the cruise arrangements and, because of a Tuesday sales event, I was able to get 3 guarantee OV staterooms for 6 of us for just under $190/per person including taxes and fees. I was also able to get a single occupant in a Category G OV on deck 3 for just over $260 including taxes and fees. These prices were all in Canadian dollars because the Canadian prices were a little lower than the US prices at the time I booked the cruise. In addition, because the Canadian Dollar was below the value of the US dollar at the time of booking, when we paid using a US credit card, we actually ended up saving a few more US dollars compared to what we would have paid had I booked the cruise in US funds to begin with.

When I made the original reservations I had My GF in a cabin with one of her DD's and her other DD was booked in a cabin with my GF's SIL. The original plan was to shift everyone around once aboard if we needed to.

The Guarantee cabin assignments were made within 24 hours and were all assigned Category F2 cabins scattered around 2 different decks.

Once the guarantee cabins were assigned, I went online to check what other cabins were available within that category and was able to call and get two cabins next to one another and another just two cabins away from those. I then was able to move my GF into my cabin, her 2 DDs into their own cabin next door and My GF's brother and SIL into the cabin 2 away from ours. I also was able to move my GF's mother to a cabin not too far away from the mid-ship elevators on deck 3.

On the morning of our cruise I drove my GF, her DDs, and mother from Orlando to Port Canaveral. I had made parking arrangements at Park N Cruise but instead of driving directly to the parking facility we decided to stop at the cruise terminal first in order to drop off all of our luggage we planned on checking curbside with the porters. We did that and then all drove together to the Park N Cruise facility to drop off the van and take the shuttle back to the port.

We arrived at Park N Cruise at around 10:30, parked the van, and then waited about 40 minutes for a shuttle back to the port. When we arrived back at the port there was a short line a the entrance where we had to show our setsail passes and IDs. There was another short line waiting to go through the port security but each of those lines moved quickly and we were upstairs waiting to check in within a few minutes.

We all got into the non-priority line and waited only about 10 minutes before getting to the counter to check in.

The 5 of us were checked in and sitting in the library aboard Monarch just slightly after noon. We didn't bother rushing up to the Windjammer because we had stopped for a big breakfast before we left Orlando. Instead, we relaxed in the library, made arrangements at guest services for our cash accounts, signed-up one of my GF's DDs for the soda package, checked our dining room table assignment and then waited just a few minutes for our staterooms to be ready.

I have much more to write but am getting sleepy...I'll continue with the rest in the morning. Good night everyone :)

Thanks for the info. I enjoy the Monarch and sail her a few times each year. I am anxious to hear the rest of your review.

I am a little distressed to hear that you had to wait 40 minutes at Park N Cruise to get to the port. Do you know why there was such a delay? We will be using them for the first time and we were hoping to drop the car and get right to the terminal .

Thanks M

I eagerly await your review as well! We will be sailing the Monarch in May - all 9 of us....three generations!

We will also be driving, so will use the Park N Cruise, so I am interested in hearing more about your experience as well. You said you had made 'arrangements', do we need to make a reservation or can we do like other cruises and just show up? We will do as you did and drop people off at the pier, but will more than likely leave most of our crew at the pier. Your long dealy is also concerning to us. Is this typical for Port Canaveral or was it possibly a fluke?

Good morning everyone, sorry for the delay getting back here to continue. Before I go on, I'll answer what I can about my experiences with Park N Cruise.

This as the first time I had ever used them and I chose them because of several recommendations made by others here at CC. I checked out their website and filled out a reservation form there for our parking a few days before our cruise. The parking facilities themselves are very easy to get to and they are a little more than a 5 minute drive to the port.

As I stated before, we chose to drive to the port to drop off our luggage before parking the van and I have mixed feelings about having done this. The initial reasoning to do it this way was because, although I was only using a small carry-on size suitcase, we had 7 other suitcases that had to be checked at the pier.

I thought it would be best to drop off all these suitcases first instead of having to load and unload them several times between parking and the port.

The problem with having done this was that at Park N Cruise they load the luggage onto the racks in the shuttle first and then tell everyone to get on the shuttle if their luggage was loaded.

Because we had already dropped off our luggage, our group of five had only small carry-on items and only my single carry-on suitcase was the only item of ours that needed to be loaded onto the luggage racks on the shuttle. They continued to fill the luggage racks without noting how many people were actually going to be boarding the shuttle. When they told everyone with luggage on the shuttle to get on, because our group of 5 only had one small suitcase, it meant that there was actually more people on the shuttle than they had seats for.

I think because we, and others, had already been waiting 40 minutes to get on a shuttle, we were all just happy to get going towards the port; even if we had to stand and try and keep our balance as the shuttle made its way to the port. The ride there was very uncomfortable for some of us who were left without a seat and had to stand on the drive to the port.

I really can't say why it took 40 minutes for a shuttle to arrive to take us to the port. I do know that they were shuttling people to and from the port for Monarch and a Carnival ship. While we were waiting for a shuttle to take us to Monarch, there were at least 2 shuttles that loaded people and took them to the Carnival ship. I got the impression that others waiting with us to go to Monarch were not impressed with the lack of shuttles going our way.

With this having been the first time I used Park N Cruise, I don't know what their usual service is like. I'm willing to bet that this was an anomaly because most people who have written about using them here at CC have given good reviews.

I will say that upon returning to Port Canaveral on the last morning of our cruise, I stood on deck watching the various shuttles drop off and pick people up. I saw the Park N Cruise shuttle go back and forth several times before I got off the ship. When I went to catch the shuttle back to the parking facilities, I only had to wait about 2 minutes before a shuttle was there to pick me up.

I believe my experience with them on the day of embarkation was not the norm, and because of that, I WILL use them again another time. If the service is the same the second time around then I will likely not use them again after that, but I do believe in giving second chances so would be willing to use them the next time I cruise from Port Canaveral.

Hi, I am new to this site but just got back yesterday from our sailing on the Monarch. We paid 60$ to park at the port, so wondering what it costed to park at your place?

Also, how did you find such a good price? We paid $400 a piece for 3 of us in the same extremely small room (partially obstructed window). Someone else we met paid about 300$ a piece for a bigger room. What did we do wrong? Any suggestions for getting a better price next time? I don't think we will be going on another unless we get a better price.

Now to continue with my review of the cruise... :) ...

After relaxing and waiting in the Library for a while we decided to head down to deck 3 to wait for the cabins to be ready and then get My GF's mother (AKA..."Grams") settled in her cabin.

The doors to the cabin passageways were not opened until about 1:20 and by that time the elevator lobby on deck 3 was packed with passengers eager to get to their cabins.

We chose to hang back away from the crowd and wait in a less crowded part of the Centrum and photo gallery area. When the cabins were made available, we all walked down to see the cabin that Grams had been assigned.

As expected, her deck 3 OV was smallish but had plenty of storage for her things. The deck 3 OVs have portholes instead of the rectangular windows that our deck 5 OV cabins had. Although the porthole didn't seem all that much smaller than our window so Grams still had lots of light and a nice view.

Hi, welcome to Cruise Critic :)

To be honest, I didn't really do anything but be flexible with the dates we were willing to cruise. We began planning this cruise in December and I booked the cabins in late December. The one thing I did do was wait to see the Tuesday sales event deals and we were lucky to have the cruise we were looking at included in those deals. The sale didn't really make a difference with the cost of the guarantee cabins I booked but it made a big difference with the cabin I booked to have my GF's mother in as a single. The Tuesday special had a reduced single supplement for the cruise we were interested in, so it saved 25% off the cost of having Grams in her own room.

It really helps to be flexible with your dates, know what you want, and know what is a good price for it...or at the very least, what you consider a good price. I tend to check prices often (at least a couple times a day), even after booking and final payment, to see if there are any upgrade opportunities available for little or no extra cost.

We paid $5.99 a day plus tax to park at Park N Cruise. Because we were n a 4 night cruise, it meant paying for 5 days of parking. It ended up being just over $30.00 for the 5 days.

After getting Grams settled in her cabin, the rest of us went up to deck 5 to see our own cabins.

As I mentioned, the deck 5 OV cabins have a rectangular window instead of the round porthole found in the deck 3 OV. Again, as expected, the cabins were smallish but comfortable with lots of storage space.

Our room steward came and introduced himself moments after we entered our cabins and our luggage arrived within an hour of being in our cabin.

As we had requested weeks prior to sailing, our room had been supplied with extra pillows and an extension cord for my GF`s nebulizer. I also noted that we had our robes hanging in the closet when we arrived as well.

After unpacking and getting things organized, the 5 of us headed up to Windjammer for some lunch. I know food is subjective, but I though the food we had all week in all venues was good. I am a fan of the chilled fruit soups so I had a bowl each day in the Windjammer as well as in the MDR at dinner when offered.

After eating some lunch, we headed back to our cabins and then went to our muster station to await the usual drill.

Our muster station was in Boleros on deck 7. The drill was painless and fairly quick. When it was over, we remained in Boleros for a few minutes to let the crowd dissipate and then we headed out on deck for sailaway.

As we pulled away from the pier and sailed down the channel towards the ocean, we were joined by at least 2 dolphins jumping and splashing in the water along side of the ship. It was an unexpected treat for my GF`s DDs who love dolphins :)

After sailaway we all went back to our cabins and prepared for our first dinner in the MDR.

I had linked all the reservations for our group of 7 and we were all seated at the same diningroom table for early seating. I loved our table configuration and location. We had table 70 in Claude`s diningroom on deck 4.

This particular table is unique because it is a round table against the aft wall in the diningroom. Most of the seating for the table comes in the form as a padded circular banquette style booth with a padded back that reached all the way up to the ceiling. The rounded formation of the banquette made the table very private and partially secluded from the tables around us - even the table right beside us.

We usually sat with 4 of us on the banquette and the remaining 3 each had a chair around the other side of the table. Everyone in our group loved this arrangement. It was very comfortable and even in a large dining room, felt cozy.

Our diningroom staff were amazing. full stop. Our head waiter was attentive and very visible each night and, as has been my experience, when the head waiter is very good, so are the waiters and assistant waiters who work under her/his supervision. Our experience this time around was proof of that theory.

The food in the MDR was good, and when I ordered something that didn't quite end up as good as I hoped, I had no problem ordering something else off the menu that I enjoyed more.

I was pleasantly surprised by the steak I ordered from the alternate menu on the first night in the MDR. This was, by far, my favorite meal of the cruise. The steak was cooked exactly as I requested and was tender and delicious.

Our diningroom team made my GF's DDs feel pampered and special and went out of their way to make sure everyone was happy.

After dinner, we all explored the ship a little more and ended up relaxing upstairs close to Sorrento's where the GF's DDs could draw and I could be close to the soft-serve machine :)

We all retired early that first night and were excited about our stop at Coco Cay the following day.

When I woke up Tuesday morning I could feel the ship rocking and I immediately wondered if our scheduled stop at Coco Cay would be cancelled. It was. The decision had been made to skip over Coco Cay on this day and since the weather reports looked good for Thursday, they switched the scheduled day at Coco Cay and the scheduled day at sea.

The cruise activities staff were hard at work making everyone aware of activities to fill the time and a new Compass was released to reflect the change in plans.

We all had a leisurely breakfast in the Windjammer and then looked at the revised compass for activities we were interested in. My GF, her DDs and I went to the napkin folding class. I quickly learned that I do not have any skill whatsoever in the fine art of napkin folding. :)

My GF began to feel unwell with the rocking of the ship so while she went to lay down, her DDs and I went to lunch and then went to take part in the digital photo scavenger hunt. I have to say that the scavenger hunt was a highlight of our time aboard. The girls and I rushed around the ship, taking photos as we went and we all had a great time doing it. The winning team received authentic RCI pens :) We were disappointed we didn't win. :)

Have I mentioned I am addicted to the soft-serve? Put me on a ship with nothing but a soft-serve machine and I'd be happy :) It became a running joke throughout the week about my cone-making abilities. I've had lots of practice and as we all know practice makes perfect. :) I practice making cones at every opportunity. :)

Continuing with day 2...As stated previously, day 2 as supposed to have been our day at Coco Cay but because of the weather conditions we were unable to make the stop there.

Prior to going on this cruise I was actually looking forward to the sea day because it has been a while since I have been able to eat lunch in the MDR and enjoy the Tutti Salad bar. I actually raved about this salad bar to my GF because she is a vegetarian and I thought she'd enjoy the variety.

Unfortunately, with all the confusion of having our itinerary switched around (and to be clear, the confusion was all mine...the staff aboard did a wonderful job adjusting the activities around) I totally forgot about the Tutti salad bar in the MDR at lunch that day.

When I realized my oversight, I was quite disappointed with myself. I knew of only one thing to do to make myself feel better...I went upstairs and made myself a soft-serve cone :) Then I made another.

After a great day of activities aboard, we all had to get ready for dinner that evening. It was formal night and everyone was very excited to dress up in their finest.

The food was wonderful and, as usual, the service was fantastic.

After dinner we all went to the theater to enjoy the show. It was entertaining, even for me who usually avoids the shows at all costs.

After the show we all went our separate ways...Grams to her cabin, My GF's brother and SIL to the casino. and My GF and I escorted her DDs to their cabin where we arranged to have roomservice delivered to them.

I was quite tired that night so I crashed early and didn't hear another thing until the 7:30am wakeup call on Day 3...Nassau....

Day 3...Nassau...

We were all up nice and early and ready to go ashore right after a good breakfast in the Windjammer. We didn't have anything in particular planned, just kind of walk around and see where the day took us.

As we walked off the ship towards Festival Place, it began to rain. The closer we got to the building, the harder the rain began to fall. By the time we got inside Festival Place, we were all quite wet and not sure what to do from there.

Luckily the rain stopped falling a few minutes later and it actually turned into a nice day. We walked away from the port towards Bay street and walked in the direction of Paradise Island for a few blocks and then we turned around and walked on the other side of Bay street back towards the British Colonial Hotel.

Along the way we stopped in various shops and ventured into little alleyways looking for interesting things to see. We found and antique shop in one such little alley and we spent a little bit of time looking around there. My GF's brother bought a couple f old coins there to add to his collection.

We walked as far as the British Colonial and we crossed back over to that side of the street to go inside the B.C. to have a look around.

When we were don there, it was getting close to lunch time so we decided to head back to the ship for some food and to decide what to do with our afternoon.

When we got back to the ship, my GF wasn't feeling very well so after getting her settled into bed I joined everyone else upstairs in the Windjammer for some lunch.

When luch was over we had decided on a plan for the afternoon. I was going to stay aboard to tend to my GF while everyone else were going to take a taxi over to the Atlantis resort. We parted ways at the Windjammer...them heading to Atlantis and I was gathering a plateful of cookies to take downstairs to my GF to try to cheer her up.

I don't know if I've mentioned, but I love the soft-serve....well, in the same way that I love soft-serve, my GF discovered that she loved the cookies. So I took a napkin covered plate of cookies down to her to try and cheer her up.

Unfortunately, by the time I got downstairs, my GF was sound asleep. I left the cookies beside the bed and a note for my GF in case she woke up and wondered where everyone was. I headed up to deck 7 and rad a book in a nice comfortable chair on the outside deck.

An hour later I went back down to check on my GF and she was vastly improved. I think the cookies had a lot to do with it :)

Everyone returned from Atlantis a little before 5pm and we all got ready for our dinner time in the MDR.

What time was the muster stn drill?

Thanks

Wendy

OK, promise to not hold me to this? To the best of my recollection it was around 3:30-ish...but we happened to be very early and sitting in Bolero's before the staff even showed up and unfortunately I didn't look at my watch to see when the drill actually got started. My apologies for not being able to be more specific :o

Hi Scott,

We are enjoying your review a great deal. We sailed on the Monarch in September and will be sailing again in a little more than a week. We had an OV on deck 7 last time, which we loved. This time, we have OV on deck 3. I was wondering if you could tell me if your GF mother had a safe in her room? We had one last time, but I have read a few reviews that lead me to believe that most rooms on the upper decks had them while decks 2, 3 and 4 were sporatic. Thanks in advance for your help and we will be sure to check out that soft serve. How on earth did I miss that last time?

Hi Belinda, I can say with 100% certainty that Grams did not have a safe in her OV on deck 3. In fact, our OV on deck 5 didn't have one either. I hope you have a wonderful time on your cruise and enjoy the soft-serve :)

Day 3 Continued....Dinner in the MDR was great and I have to say once again that our team looking after us was superb.

We finished dinner kind of late this night because we ere all so busy having a great time and enjoying each others company. When e left the dining room, we headed back to our cabin because my GF was still feeling a little worn out from the day.

When we arrived back at our stateroom, our steward had already done the nightly bed turndown. He had also left us a little surprise. He must have noticed the plate with a few leftover cookies from when I had brought them to my GF earlier in the day because sitting it its place was a fresh plate with a stack of cookies sitting on a fancy folded napkin. My GF was thrilled :) I thought it was a really nice touch and definitely something that went above and beyond our expectations.

We chose to just hang out in the cabin after dinner so my GF could rest. We watched 'Moneyball' (it was one of a few movies that were on constant repeated play on the television throughout the week) and then fell asleep for the night.

Day 4...Coco Cay...

We were up early and out on the 7th deck watching as we approached Coco Cay. We walked as far forward as we could and watched as the crew readied the ship to drop anchor. When the ship reached the desired position, the crew dropped the anchor. We couldn't see it splash into the ater but we sure could hear it...it is loud!

I decided that if I ever stay in a cabin all the way forward around the anchor, I would make sure to be up and out of my cabin before the anchor drops...I would not like that loud noise to be my wakeup call LOL.

We all went upstairs early for breakfast in the Windjammer and then went to our cabins to grab any items we wanted to take over to Coco Cay. I grabbed 4 glasses of ice water to fill my travel water bottle, went to sign out 5 beach towels, and then we all went downstairs to get in line for the tender.

I am very glad we returned to the island this day when we couldn't make the stop on Tuesday. The water was nice and calm and the weather was about as perfect as we could have hoped for.

When we arrived on the island, we walked through the little market and then headed along the little road towards the back of the island where the beach is less crowded.

We chose a spot in the shade close to a few hammocks and we all spread out and relaxed. I chose to go to the water and walk along the beach looking at the fish and other sea creatures. Fish, crabs, small stingrays...there was lots to see.

After a while I thought iit might be fun to rent a kayak and paddle around for a while. My GFs eldest DD joined me and we rented a tandem kayak and paddled out towards the island directly across from Coco Cay. If you're interested in kayaking, be aware that when you rent one, they tell you the limited area where you're allowed to paddle. The area is not very large so we paddled out towards that island (where we were told to not go on the island but paddling to it was allowed). The water on this side of the island was quite choppy. I would have definitely preferred to paddle around on the other side of Coco Cay where we had been hanging out for the day because the water as nice and smooth, but that side was off limits to those of us who rent kayaks. However, we still had fun paddling over (because we had only rented the kayak for an hour, we didn't make it all the way across to that other island) and back to Coco Cay. By the time we got back, it was time to return the kayak.

After the kayaking, we walked back to our spot on the beach and I relaxed in a hammock while everyone else went to get lunch. While I was waiting for them to return, I was joined by another wild creature that lived on the island. A very friendly (and obviously well fed) cat. One of the crew members came over and explained that this was a cat that stayed in one of the areas on the island with the staff who live there.

After lunch we relaxed on the beach and then walked back through the shops on our way back to the tender.

We all enjoyed our day on Coco Cay and it is still my favorite stop on the 3 and 4-night cruises.

We all got ready for dinner and headed back to the MDR for our last dinner there. Dinner was fantastic and we were all sad to say our goodbyes to our wonderful team that had done a great job of pampering us for the last few days.

After dinner, we all went back to our cabins to get our bags packed and put outside in the hall. Because I only had my small carry-on suitcase, I packed most of my things and kept some other items out to use in the morning.

My GFs DDs had a few dollars left on their accounts (oh, I didn't mention this before but I had added them to my cash account and arranged for them to have some money to spend. I did this on day 1 right after we had come aboard) so I went with them to the shops and they each got a couple items to take back home with them and remember their first cruise.

We also went down to the photo gallery where they decided upon 4 pictures they wanted to keep. My GF and I each had a coupon for a free photo so 2 of the pictures were free and the crew member told us that thy were also giving a 50% discount to diamond and above C&A members. That worked out really well. We ended up getting all 4 photos for a total of $20.

When we got back to the cabins, the girls decided to stay in for the night so I left them a few dollars for room service tip and then my GF and I went out to spend some time with her brother and SIL.

We met them in the casino and my GF and I had decided to use our coupons for free slot machine spins as well as the $5.00 match play coupons.

The free spin coupons netted us a coupon from the slot machine worth $0.06. I found out later that the coupons spit out by that special slot machine dont have any cash value and presenting the coupon at the cashier got us a little RCI keychain.

We used our $5.00 match play coupons at the roulette table. My GF played her coupon as well as a $5.00 chip on red. I played my coupon and $5.00 chip on black. The wheel spun and the ball landed on black. We made a profit of $5.00. We repeated the same thing 2 more times and made a profit of $5.00 each time so we walked away with our $15.00 to spend on a couple of drinks.

When we were done in the casino, we grabbed a drink and found some comfortable chairs and hung out until it was almost midnight. e decided to head back to our cabins and call it a night.

The next morning when I awoke, I looked out the window to see we were already back in Port Canaveral. We showered and got dressed and headed up to the windjammer for our last breakfast onboard.

After breakfast, we cleared out of our cabins and headed out on deck to wait until almost everyone else was off the ship before we disembarked. We watched the traffic flow on the gangway from where we were watching on deck 7 and when the flow of people slowed and became more sporadic we headed down and walked off the ship for the last time.

The line for customs was not very long and we made it through quite fast and we got a porter to help us with all our luggage and get us outside the terminal. We had decided that I would be the only one to catch the shuttle back to Park N Cruise and then I would drive back to the port to pick everyone and the luggage.

The Park N Cruise shuttle arrived within 2 minutes and I was back to the port with the van about 15 minutes later. We loaded everything into the van and headed back towards Orlando.

Until we meet again, Monarch. :)
