Pacaya volcano excursion

Has anyone done the hike up Pacaya volcano in Guatemala? I'm just wondering how strenuous it is. We are moderately fit - did the entire Cinque Terre trail in Italy in one day last summer with no issues - and, given where we live, the altitude on the volcano will not be a problem. Also, are actual hiking boots necessary or can I do it in my Ecco touring sandals ( which is what I wore for Cinque Terre)?
