Convince my guy sea days aren't so bad...

I've been on 2 ocean cruises with my cousin. Loved them. My guy and I have been on one river cruise with another coming up this summer. He loved it.

He has ADD and has be be constantly on the move. To him relaxation is driving or gardening.

There is a Celebrity Constellation cruise next summer on the Adriatic. It has 2 sea days. He has agreed to one sea day but not two.

He doesn't like casinos, pools or sun bathing. We would have a balcony cabin.

Any ideas of what he could do to keep him interested? Walking upper deck? Are there ever excursions to the engine room or captain's bridge?

Thanks in advance!

Not sure this is a matter of convincing, but more a matter of personal preference. DW and I love sea days and were delighted that 10 out of the first 12 days of our last cruise (Transpacific) were sea days. In fact, we almost stayed on the ship during the only port (Honolulu) during the first 12 days :). But we have also met cruisers that simply hate sea days. As to what to do during sea days, this is also a personal preference issue. Some folks like to get into the activities and others (like DW and moi) are delighted to have lots of time for reading and just socializing.

If you go to the celebrity section, you should be able to find their daily schedule for a sea day. This is a list of all the activities. You would get it each morning of the cruise. There are quite a few things going on, but I hesitate to try to list them as I am likely to remember those I like.

I'll keep my points general, since I've never been on Celebrity.

Sea days aren't so bad. They are, like every other day, what you make of them. There are far more activities - especially during the day - on the ship on sea days. Most probably won't be of interest to your guy, but I'm guessing he'll find at least a few things every day that might tickle his fancy. Encourage him to do things that might be a little different. Maybe he'll find something he likes.

I know on Carnival there are behind-the-scenes tours that include both the bridge and engine room. Perhaps Celebrity has something similar. It's worth asking around if you think it might help pass the time.

I do a lot of reading on sea days, but that's probably not interesting to him. Is he a gamer? Loading up a smartphone/tablet/laptop with games can help pass the time.

Good luck and have fun.

Let me see....I have the chance to do a 12-day cruise on the Adriatic (which, by the way, most people in the world can't afford to do), but it's a dealbreaker if you make me endure 2 sea days instead of 1. This is mature adult thinking and behavior?

No-one can convince me. ;)

Can't think of a worse cruise than a trans-Atlantic with 4 or 5 sea-days on the trot.

But it's easy enough to hack a couple of sea-days - and I'm guessing yours won't even be two days in succession.

And Celebrity has a lot more on the go than the little old tubs that I sail on.

Ship tours tend to be grossly over-priced, and I doubt they visit either engine room or bridge, they seem to be mainly the "hotel" side of things.

Since he's not sailed an ocean cruiser, one day will be exploring the ship & finding his way round, mebbe taking his camera with him. The other can involve ship activities, cinema, and such.

Go ahead & book it.

So you made a mistake, you though it was one sea day & it turned out to be two. I promise he won't be pulling his hair out with boredom.:)

For an adult, he seems very immature. I think he's using the ADD as an excuse.

That's a little harsh!

Just get him involved in on board activities, he will have a good time...

Very harsh and ignorant and rude too! Hey Doctor Roz, where did you get your degree from?

As posters have said get him involved in activities, the more the better.

And look, some people just are not wired for cruising so if the OP's DH doesn't like the activities offered by Celebrity, find another cruise line that is more to his liking or find an X cruise with one sea day. I like golf, my DW not so much. I don't force her to go on golf holidays and she doesn't force me to go on spa holidays.:p

I love sea days. I too need to be doing something. While I may stop a few times during the day, I'll usually spend it walking around the ship and checking everything out. I may read for an hour max. While the DW is napping, I'll be topside with my binoculars or at the gym. I've never gotten bored on a cruise. Have a great cruise. :)

It's irrelevant if you, I, or anyone else on CC would never get bored on a cruise. It's only relevant if the OP's DH would. Cruising is a very niche way to travel. I know lots of people who have tried it and HATED it. Lots of them find it BORING! Others find it a very superficial way to experience new places. We all like/love cruising and the cruising experience but many do not.

Frankly, I would like more people to hate cruising, then I could get cheaper prices.:)

Are the two sea days together? If not then I would think that he should be fine. There is a gym and spa and possibly a sports court as well.

I assume you don't know the person in question, so just how do you know he will have a good time?

Conversely it is very mature to know your limitations and find workarounds and/or avoidances.

Hubby cancelled a South Pacific cruise because there were too many sea days. Now he's booked this Hawaii cruise with five cruise days each way. He says he's okay with it. He's claustrophobic, but we'll be on a fairly large ship. I think that will help. Plus, he enjoys onboard activities and we have a balcony cabin.

I have a couple of other ideas. (shocking for this thread I know:D) If he takes lots of pictures he could sit in a lounge and edit his pictures. My husband enjoys doing this so he doesn't have this to do when he gets home. My daughter edited her go pro on her down time on our vacation in February. It was great to have a video to show our friends and relatives "the cliff notes version" of our vacation when we got back home.

My husband is the same...he's not a pool person...and while he can sit and do nothing, he can't do it for long! Reading isn't his favorite thing, either (which I don't understand AT ALL!!!) He despises sea days. Hates them. Can't help, but can sympathize!!!!

The only reason cruising is affordable is because enough people like it to make it a mass-market commodity.

But on point: I have to wonder how people who get too bored on one or two sea days spend their free time at home. It's not as though there is nothing to do on a ship - or that all people live in very interesting communities.
