Thanks! I've rented cars for that trip much cheaper than what you were quoted, but prices vary significantly depending upon the tourist season (hint: they are real cheap in late August when no one wants to come to FLA! :o).

Thanks for the info! I was just about to research a bunch of shuttle companies.

I found a rental car rate from Thrifty for $42 one way (in April), HOWEVER, keep in mind that there are "one way drop off fees" ($21) and a lot of other nickel & dime fees + tax that come with that. Our $42 rate jumped to $80!

We're just back from a cruise 2 weeks ago and I can tell you that this was the part that broke the whole cruise for us. I will tell you that the cruise was the best we had ever been on and if they move the Freedom to another port I will sail on her again but we won't go out of Port Canaveral again because of the headache of this part.

After looking on here and talking to a few we booked with Royal Shuttle. It was $150 for 3 both ways. I will tell you that they charge your card as soon as you reserve so they had my money for 2 months before we used them. We never saw Royal as we waited an hour at midnight for a taxi they called and had to drive from Port Canaveral to the airport. When off the ship it's very chaotic and they have a bunch of rules and we ended up on AAA Access as that's who Royal called to take us. The trasmission was going out in AAA van and he never drove over 40 miles an hour and I"m sure the lady and daughter next to me in the van missed their flight. Watching the other services pass us I would say book with one of the big ones even if they are more expensive because in hindsight we would have been a lot more happy and their means of transportation were newer and more efficient. We saw Cocoa Beach and Travelynx keep passing us and their accomodations looked wonderful.

Hope you have a great cruise and enjoy the wonderful weather we had!

I think we've decided to rent a car from the airport in Orlando, drive it to Cape Canaveral, park it at a hotel, shuttle to and from the port, and have the car waiting for us at the hotel after the cruise so that we can ultimately drive wherever we want and then return to Orlando. We're planning to stay overnight both before and after the cruise anyway, so we'll have transportation when we need it. Overall, we're thinking that it will be more convenient and probably less expensive for us.

Here is a list of hotels that we found that have free parking during the cruise (Snooze and Cruise):

http://www.visitspacecoast.com/Snoozeandcruise/

Cocoa Beach Suites $76

Hilton Cocoa Beach Oceanfront $129 Radisson at the Port $92

Days Inn $94 Residence Inn $169

Four Points $165 Clarion

Comfort Inn $79 Courtyard by Marriott $109

Best Western $85 La Quinta $109

Ramada Econolodge

Country Inn and Suites $116 (Some people say this hotel can be won less expensively by bidding on 2.5 hotels on Priceline.)

So you won't cruise out of Port Canaveral because you made a bad choice in shuttle services?

I've cruised out of PC three times. Twice I took a limo and once I drove there. My only problem with that port was on my RCCL cruise where the problems were RCCL related, and not caused by the port.

Instead of looking for the lowest price, look for the best value for your dollar. That takes into consideration the reputation of the company as well as price. You get what you pay for.

most of the agencies (budget, avis) have locations right near the port in cape canaveral (you can see the ship from budget) that offer free shuttle service to and from the port. why pay for the rental car to sit at the hotel? also, now you have more choices of hotels as you don't have to worry about free parking. seems easier to me, drop the car and shuttle to the port and get off the ship and shuttle to car. hope this helps.

As for reliability and A1 service, Executive vip limo is the best choice.

We have been back for 2 week now and I'm still mad about our transportatin from Port Canaveral to MCO. I booked with Orlando Disney Limo, I booked a black van with a car seat for my family of 10. The time I asked to be picked up was 10:30am. Received a call as the ship began to disembark stating that if we were not ready to leave at 9:45 we would have to wait for the 11:45 shuttle. I thought I booked a private van because we took up the whole thing! I was called back by a terrible rude woman named Ciindy who said I did not book a private van but a shuttle! Then why was asked what time I wanted to be picked up, never was I told either 9:45 or 11:45. She then proceeded to yell at me and hang up on me. They kept calling my cell telling me Paul was on his way but wouldn't say when he'd be there. We stood out in the hot parking lot until almost noon. We were the last people waiting for a ride. They was no shelter, not the fault of Orlando-Disney Limo, of course but had it raining that would have been a nightmare. Best part is I called to confirm everything before we left for the cruise and was told we were "all set". I also was charged in full the day I booked our ride. Horrible customer service, they speak very little English, and I got yelled at and hung up on! Never book with these people!!:mad::mad::mad:

The last phone I got from cindy stated that the van on its way did not have a car seat, we had no choice but to take it anyways we would have missed our flight. Luckily when he arrived it did have the car seat!

Yes, it's true I won't cruise out of Port Canaveral based on the trip back and forth from Orlando to the port and Vice versa. Is it based on a bad choice to save money, I think not! I did my research and found others who had booked this company and it wasn't the cheapest price I found and I called the BBB. I could find nothing.

The reason I won't cruise out of Port Canaveral is because I've cruised out of Miami numerous times and Ft. Lauderdale and it's much simpler and cheaper in transportation and takes a lot of stress out of my vacation.

You have a right to cruise where you want and I have a right to cruise where I want. Someone asked for opinions and I gave mine on a service we just had and there were 8 other people from 4 other companies that were stuck with AAA because the companies they booked through called and asked them to take their passengers as they were next in line to collect passengers. I think there could be a better plan all around for the transportation to and from.

Sorry you had a bad experience with RCCL but, alas, I find them superb and have never found one thing wrong with them. Again, my opinion!

Robin, I think I may be inclined to agree with you about the transportation issues to Port Canaveral. I will be leaving from this port in June and it does seem to be a bit of a hassle and much more expensive. I've only been on two other cruise and they both left out of Miami. We stayed at a hotel near the airport and took the free hotel shuttle. The next morning we took a shuttle to the port that was no more than 15 dollars. I wish I had done more research before I booked this cruise. I'm not going to let it ruin my vacation but it is a lesson learned.

I ended up booking a car through Thrifty. We arrive 2 days prior to our cruise and leave 3 days after our cruise, so the rental was $212 total for 13 days. Country Inn & Suites at the port will allow us to park the car there for free during our cruise, so it ended up being well worth the price.

I'll post and let you know how it works out......because our cruise leaves May 20, 2012! Woohoo!!

Was it cheaper to rent the car and park it than to make two shorter (a 2-day and a 3-day) rentals?

I agree with the previous posters who said that renting a car is the way to go. We have never paid more than $50 including all fees and taxes - some car rentals don't charge a drop off fee...shop around, and it gives you the flexiblity to make a stop to pick up sodas or something you forgot to pack.

I disagree with the previous posters who say PC is too difficult a port to cruise out of. We can consistantly find cheaper airfare from here (RDU) to MCO than we can to MIA and the short drive with almost no traffice from MCO to PC is alot easier IMHO.

My only complaint with flying into MCO is the high percentage of excited kids on the flights to Orlando and the high percentage of crouchy ones on the flights out of there!:D

JohninDC, yes.....it was actually less expensive for us to rent a car and park it (since our hotel allows free parking during the cruise) than to rent for the two shorter periods. Some say that is not the case, but from what we found for the duration we needed, it was true.

I guess for car rental pricing, like airline pricing, logic does not apply. :o Glad it worked out for you - good luck! :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Out of three cruises from Port Canaveral I have used Cocoa Beach Shuttle twice and had my own vehicle once. Cocoa Beach Shuttle has been on time and provided comfortable reasonably priced transportation each time. The one time I had my own vehicle I came to Florida on the Amtrak Auto Train. I find Port Canaveral to be a nice port to cruise from and the terminal set up is easy to understand and I have had smooth boarding processes each time. Of course you can have bad experiences anywhere you decide to cruise from, but if you base your decision to never cruise from Port Canaveral again on one poor transportation incident that is actually out of the hands of the port then so be it.

Beware of Backstage Limo.We used for 13 of us (including 5 children) from MCO to Port Canaveral in April and although the driver was prompt, he was unpleasant and rude. To make matters worse, he was on his cell phone & texting constantly while driving (and was in & out of lanes). We've contacted the company a few times to make them aware of the unsafe habits of the driver and they never even bothered to respond - I guess safety isn't a top concern for them.

Please Please PLease don't use this company! They are terrible. I wish I had researched them better before booking them for our cruise this past weekend. They are rude and apparently notoriously late. I paid for a carseat and there was none available. They were 1 1/2 hours late to pick us up. When I called to complain that they were late, the person on the line called me "the devil from hell" because I complained about their shabby service.

Use another company!

Anyone used Royal Shuttle?

Their rates are:

1 Person $30.00 2 People $50.00 3 People $60.00 4 People $70.00 5 People $80.00 6 People $90.00 7 People $95.00 8 People $100.00

And lap infants are free.

As we have 4 people plus baby, this is the cheapest that I've found for that number of people.

This is from Orlando Airport to the Port or any hotels in the Port area.

As I was thinking of staying at a hotel, I asked how much it would be from hotel to the Port and was quoted $4 per person.
