We are coming to AUS for 2 months (holland america 48 day circumnav of Australia and NZ).

We need to be able to get email and phone north america (canada mostly and US).

Is there a provider that anyone can recommend that has good rates and coverage throughout AUS?? We don't mind buying new phone and/or chip...

Do any of the providers also work in NZ (only there two weeks, so less of a concern)

We're not retired yet, so we have to keep the business going while we're on the road... Thanks so much!

For e-mail, your best bet is actually just to use Internet cafes, which are pretty plentiful throughout both countries. SMS is also very useful when you're actually on the move, and probably rather cheaper than mobile internet (which is what most mobile e-mail actually is).

 I've got a Telstra pre-paid SIM that works in both Australia and New Zealand. It now also roams internationally in a number of other countries as well.

Globaliser, we will be in Australia and New Zealand in January and want a prepaid simm to call and text back to the UK, did you get your Telstra SIM over there or are you able to buy them from the UK,

any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Jo:)

We just arrived Sydney and I purchased a sim card from Vodaphone at the airport. We're only here for 4 days. It was 10 AU for the service and 20 minute sim was 20 bucks. They said it would work in NZ but it would be 3 bucks per minutes. Shop around. They also have phones you can rent. If you bring your own make sure it is an unlocked GSM phone.

Internet cafes for internet are the best as said previous. Buying a local SIM card such as Telstra or Optus is unless you use a lot of air time not much of a savings over just roaming (assusming you have a quad band phone if from US or Canada) with ATT, TMobile ,or Rogers I use a call back service global roaming which offers good rates in most of the world. It is pre pay however so you must plan on using it to realize the savings.
