I woke up in a cold sweat with a thought running through my mind.

"How will cruises be affected just prior and during a gov. shutdown."

Will Customs be operating when we come back to check our passports and let
us back in the country?

Will Port officials be available so the ship can return to the dock.

What will Carnival's position be if they have a boat load of people that
they can't unload.

Is there anyone out there that can intelligently comment on these these
questions.

you should be ok... they are considered 'essential services' or personnel

The military is one of several departments whose employees are considered essential for national security purposes. The Department of Homeland Security, which comprises organizations like the Secret Service, Customs and Border Protection and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, would have to furlough roughly 14 percent of its employees, far lower than many other cabinet-level agencies.

At the Department of Homeland Security, which includes the U.S. Secret Service, the Coast Guard, the Transportation Security Administration, Customs and Border Protection, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, most of the 231,117 workers would remain on the job. Officials said 31,295 would be furloughed.

maybe some slight delays, but i do believe they will let you back in the country

Customs is excepted, so the agents continue to work, although when they get paid is another story. The lines will most likely be longer and the agents unhappy.

Port officials are not federal employees normally.

So, Carnival will not be left with a ship full of passengers it cannot unload.

If the government shuts down while you are on your cruise you will have to continue to cruise in circles until the shutdown is over. As food will be in short supply all lines are stocking up on peanut butter and flour (to make bread). So they wil serve three meals of PB no J.

This is good to know. I think I will be proactive and leave even earlier than planned on Sat incase we encounter long lines, or heaven forbid only one line open, at the security check in.

Coming back..no worries, I'll gladly stay in FL a few extra days

I've wondered about the same thing...we leave on Thursday for San Juan to board the Valor for our first cruise on Sunday. I didn't think that we'd have issues traveling, but we are planning a trip to the El Yunque Rainforest in Puerto Rico and we have a Carnival excursion to St John to Trunk Bay. Both are National Parks.

When we returned from our 2013 cruises (2/2/13), customs was very understaffed and slow. It took us 1-1/2 hours to get through customs at Port Everglades, and we were zone 1 (Platinum). This was due to the start of sequestration!

The National Park site has nothing on Trunk Bay but they do have a facebook page that indicates All National Parks will be closed to visitors

We were headed to Trunk Bay in October, I have my fingers crossed.

I'm already being affected. I sailed on HAL last week so had to have my passport with me. I had planned to send it out this week to get visa pages added. I require them for QE's 2013 world voyage, for the Chinese and Indian visas. I'm down to only one free visa page, and the world voyage requires 10 blank pages.

Of course, now there is no passport services, and I am slightly freaking out. I hope this situation is resolved quickly, or I'll be in a real pickle. . .
