Renting a car

We have rented a car twice in Curacao on cruise stops....very easy with the Avis at Megapier. Only problem was that last time we docked at the other pier! Still, it's not a bad walk over to the Megapier to get the car. Maybe 1/4 mile walk? A map comes with the car and it is fairly easy to navigate, especially once you get out of town. We drove up to Westpunt and then stopped at a couple beaches, including Playa Porto Marie.

Have fun with the car! Cas Abou is marked pretty well, but Porto Marie can be a bit trickier to find. They have driving directions on their website, I think, and it might be worthwhile to print them off. There was another good area further up the road. Playa Kalki, I think? There was a dive shop there and, from what I understand, usually good snorkeling, but the waters were too rough to snorkel the day we were there about two weeks ago.

We have rented from Avis twice. Both times easy and the staff is very nice and helpful. Getting in and out of the port area is easy.

We have been to Playa Kenepa three times. We like that beach. It has palapas and picnic tables, a snack bar, bathrooms and a very nice roomy parking lot above the beach with stairs that go down to it. The picture below was taken of the beach from the parking lot.

One fair word of advice- get fairly close to the city before it gets very dark. Alot of people walk on the country roads, and some cars don't drive with their head lamps on. Once you get close to Willemstad there will be streetlights. Other than that, the roads are well maintained and easy to navigate. A very pretty drive.

Have a great time!

Playa Kenepa looks lovely! Where is it in relation to Porto Marie and Willemstad? By the way, on the way to Porto Marie there is a salt pond with a bunch of flamingoes.

It's west of Willemstad, about a 30-40 minute drive from the cruise ship Mega Pier, but it's before Westpunt. Portomari is off of it's own road, it's hard to explain.

This is a website that will tell you more about the beaches:

If anyone needs to rent a car, I can recommend a mom and pop place with the unusual name of Car Rental 30 Plus. Antonio or someone else can pick you up from any location, and drive you to their office in Santa Maria, on the way to the airport. It will take a while to get the car because of this, but we found their prices a little cheaper than Avis and the big boys, and the car we rented (Hyundai) was in good shape. The kiosk over the pontoon bridge in Punda has lots of little cards for car rental places. Prices seem to be all the same. We really liked having the car, although the island was having a LOT of rain when we were there (Dec. 3-7) so some roads were flooded.

Flamingo Sanctuary is by the salt flats by or in St. Willibrordus/Jan Kok. Turn left, away from the beautiful church on the hill, to get to the flamingo pond.
