This might have been posted already, but I didn't see it:

Royal Caribbean

Where You Can Smoke: Beginning January 2008, smoking is permitted only on cabin balconies, on the starboard side of open decks and in the designated smoking areas of public rooms.

Where You Can't: With the adoption of the new smoking policy, smoking will be prohibited in all cabins (except on balconies) and in one public room on each ship. In addition, as always, dining areas and show lounges will be non-smoking, along with the port side of open decks.

Any passenger caught smoking in a cabin will be charged a $250 penalty. The new smoking policy will not be enacted until the summer 2008 season on Legend of the Seas, Rhapsody of the Seas and Splendour of the Seas.

Yeah, but I'm new here! Do I get a free pass this time? LOL

:p

Your free pass is approved, but just this one time! :D

My DW and I are both "Evil Smokers" but we obey the rules and are courteous to our non-smoking cruising friends. :D

We will sail on the Radiance in about two weeks and I will report back to you what happens to us on our balcony with this new policy. After repeated requests, I have not received a reply from RCI on how to dispose of our cigarette butts in the cabin. We know not to throw them into the Ocean or flush them down the toilet. This leaves only putting them in the trash can in the cabin.

We are wondering if someone in RCI will use "butts in the trash can" to accuse us of smoking in the cabin and charge us the $250 fee. Many non smokers have told me that the "butts in the trash can" will "stink up" the room almost as bad as smoking in the room.

I will let you all know what happens when we return from the cruise.

I would think that butts in the trash can would create a bigger fire hazard than smoking in the cabin! Maybe they will put ashtrays on all the balconies?

When we were smoking, we always just smoked on the balcony, since we did not smoke in our house. We just asked the room attendant for a ashtray for the balcony and he emptied it when he cleaned the room. Month and half smoke-free.

Good luck to you.... and Happy New Year!!!

Standard procedure on RCI is there won't be an ashtray in your cabin, you have to request it from your cabin attendant who will be more than happy to bring you one. Do this on embarkation day as your attendant will probably stop by to see you. With the new rules it may be a good idea to let the attendant take care of the ashtray during the sailing as well as mentioning to him or her you are familiar with the new rule regarding smoking in the cabin.

Enjoy your cruise on Radiance, great ship. We sailed on her in 2006. :)

Just a thought...

Last January we were on Oceania's Regatta and our next door neighbor smoked on their balcony even though Oceania only allows smoking in two very sprecfic areas. I won't comment on that other than to say that they used a large Coke bottle 1/2 full of water as their ash tray. Seems like a reasonable solution to your problem.

I am a non-smoker, while my wife is a smoker. She brings her own ashtray; and, when she is finished smoking, for the day, she makes certain that all of the butts are out and then disposes of them in a separate small bag, which is placed in the trash can about once or twice during the cruise.

This is the same ashtray which accompanies us on our various beach visits. Sadly, many smokers are inconsiderate of others; and, I expect, that in future years, Florida will follow the example of left coast California and ban smoking on all beaches.

Also sadly, many non-smokers exhibit paucity in the way of consideration for others.

Ok, and?

The smoking policy hasn't changed other than you can't smoke in the cabin anymore. So now you have to smoke on the balcony or in one of the designated smoking area's.

Anyway, who is going to rat you out if you are smoking in the cabin? The cabin steward? No way. Because he is then washing his tip down the drain.

You don't know what rules and/or penalties RCI has put into effect for the room stewards and crew. If the next person in the room complains about linens and furniture that smells like smoke they will know the room steward didn't do his job. The fine can be added to the credit card after the room has been inspected.

Congrats, I am a month ahead of you at 2 and 1/2 months smoke free.

This policy is pretty meaningless as many of us smokers, myself included never smoked in our cabins anyway so I doubt you will see this huge difference. When this policy was first announced back in July I did a survey on these board on who would NOW book a balcony (that didn't before) because of the new rules and the number was minute, like 1-2%.

I will be boarding Liberty of the Seas this Saturdy(D2 Balc), and will just ask the

Cabin Attendant, how to handle the evidence. . . .

Radio

;) ;)

Hello Radio!!

The OP quoted RCI's new policy as allowing the smoking....in one public room on board.

Would you please investigate, while sailing on the Liberty soon, if this is true that it will be only ONE public room?

The Voyager-class and Freedom-class ships have the obviously designated Connoisseur Club (cigar lounge, forward, Deck 5) . Will the existence of this room on these ships mean that there will no longer be smoking in the Casino or on the one side of the room in the Viking Crown Lounge (Olive or Twist/Dizzy's/Ellington's et al)?

Thank you in advance for looking into this; I would very much appreciate it.

Bon Voyage~~

Leslie

Edit!: Actually, I re-read the original post, and still am unclear as to what the CHANGES are regarding the public rooms. So sorry! Thank you very much for any help.

According to the original announcement in the summer, ONE bar/lounge on each ship was going to be totally smoke-free and the cabins themselves, everything else is basically staying the same.

Their are no changes to public rooms. The only smoking changes are that you can't smoke inside your stateroom.

You can still smoke in the designated area's and on your balcony.

Other than that, everything remains the same.

You can still smoke in the bars, casino & outside decks.

This makes no sense at all. Because you could be physically smoking out on the balcony and the wind blows the smoke inside the cabin. I always left the sliding door open. I have been a non smoker almost 6 months, so all this nonsense just makes me laugh.

How are they going to fine you after you have already checked out of the room at the end of the cruise? It would have to be during the actual cruise. And who are they going to fine? What if you have 2 people in the room that smoke? Who gets the fine? Legally, the fine is BS and will never happen or be enforced.

Good for you :)

We're at 19 years, 5 months at this point. In some rare moments we both still desire a smoke, but the feeling passes in just moments. It's great to have the monkey off your back!

I've read there will be a cleaning fee attached to your onboard account after you check out. Somewhere in the area of $200-250.

And those non-smokers who are chapping their hands applauding might not be so gleeful when they try to use their balconies and have smoking neighbors.:(

I sincerely doubt that. There is at least the opportunity for the smoke to clear outside.

We've never had the displeasure of smokers on balconies before, but a few times have had to tolerate smoke in the halls and coming through the walls of ocean view and inside cabins.

I'm not trying to start an argument with you, this is just our personal experience with over 13 cruises to date.

I do hope the smokers find a way to stop, for their own health and well being as well as the opportunity to have a longer life with their loved ones. It was the gift we gave to our children before they were born, non-smoking parents. Both of us grew up in smoking homes and smoked until our first pregnancy.

Happy New Year :)

Do what we do. We have a little travel ashtray. Just leave it on the balcony and stick a note on the mirror for the stateroom attendant to clean out the ashtray on the balcony. :D

But I wouldn't be fearful if you throw your cigarette butts in the ashtray. Anybody can smell the difference that you did not smoke in the stateroom.

Plus the policy is not about 'making non smokers happy' but rather a measure of safety and 'destruction of property' (i.e. burn marks etc). So the little bit of stink won't hurt. RCI always cleaned rooms up and made then smell free when people smoked in the stateroom.

It will be interesting to see how tolerant non-smokers in adjoining balcony rooms are. I am always tolerant and courteous and I always found arrangements with neighboring cabins.
