Courtyard San Juan Miramar

Haven't seen any recent reviews or comment on the courtyard San Juan Miramar a Marriott hotel. Anyone stayed there recently and your thoughts on the accommodations, surrounding area, and did you use Marriott points or cash? I was thinking of using 25,000 points which is equal to about $250 a night but thinking I could get it cheaper through Priceline or Hotels.com? Only one night pre cruise.

Any other hotels you could recommend instead around or under $150/night.

Travel date is Feb 21, 2015

Thanks

Since you have received no comments, I will give you a little insight into what we found in the Miramar section of PR last February. We stayed at the Hotel Miramar which looks to be about 7 blocks from your hotel of interest. This hotel served our needs quite well. The room was large, the beds were comfortable and the staff was VERY helpful. There was no pool, but we got there around 2:00 pm Saturday and left around 11:30 Sunday morning.

Within two blocks of the hotel were eight places to eat. They had a basic pizza, taco and a Subway restaurant. There was a 24/7 diner (we ate there before going to thge Valor on Sunday morning). There was a very nice wine bar and then two upscale caribbean restaurants. We ate in a place I think was called the Lima Restaurant. The food and drink were excellant. Also in this block was a fairly decent sized grocery store.

I hope you get some responses on your basic questions, but I thought I would comment on your "surrounding area" question.

I am considering this hotel for next March but the Trip Advisor reviews aren't good. A 66% approval rating isn't what I like to see. Hard to imagine that a Marriott property would be rated so poorly.

Still checking CC member reviews are usually very reliable :)

If you want a Courtyard Marriott I would choose the one on Isla Verde over Miramar. You will be right on the beach, recently renovated, onsite casino, r es staurants and great live salsa music on the weekend. 21$ cab fare to the port, plus 1$ per bag, which is a fixed rate. Water can be rough sometimes but more often than not the protection of the outer reefs make for great swimming. Two pools, hot tubs, and swim up bar......and our favorite, hammocks for laying around and reading a book while looking at the sea.

Yikes! It's been over 5 years since I stayed there. Wow. Time flies.

I was planning one pre-cruise night and 2 post-cruise nights in San Juan. It was my first attempt at Priceline or Hotwire. I use the "stuck" thread at the top of this board. Back then, it was very active and had lots and lots of useful info.

I got the Marriott Stellaris for the post-cruise nights, but didn't put in the correct info (had hoped for the Sherato OSJ - oops) for the pre-cruise and got the Courtyard Miramar.

But that was OK. The hotel was fine. Asked at the desk for a recommendation for local food and walked down to a diner/restaurant for dinner (my first mofongo was delicious). Went back the next morning for breakfast even. Shopping across the street for last-minute things.

It isn't a tourist area. If you want a resort, you'll have to stay elsewhere. If you want to explore the old city, you'll need to take a taxi (don't know about the bus). I thought about staying there for my pre-cruise night this time, but my cruise buddy wanted a resort, so I used Priceline express deal and got La Concha.
