Naples to Sorrento by ferry

Yes, you will be close. Just want to warn you, though, that when you collect your information, the location of ships vary in port (eg, one time I had very specific directions to go "right" in Naples to find the SITA bus, but I was on the other side of the port and should have gone "left"). Your onboard travel guide should be able to point you in the right direction once you're there. Also, if you take a look from the aft before you disembark, you should be able to see where the ferries are.

Enjoy Sorrento! Went there for the first time this summer and thoroughly enjoyed it! (Tip: in the Church of San Francesco, there's an adjoining cloister (chiostro). Upstairs is a free music box exhibit. The exhibition room adjoins an outdoor balcony overlooking the sea, giving beautiful views!)

Also be aware of the ferry schedules. We didn't check and had to wait around for about 1 hour then found out they only had 2 returns, last was was at about 4pm. So only had a few hours.

We loved Sorrento! We took the bus up the hill and then wandered around the main area (near the bus station), then ended up in another shopping area that ended up on a view point that was stunning. From there we took the lift (1 €) down to the water level and then went to a beach club. Best day ever!

Depends on where you dock. Grand Princess was at the farthest berth (opposite end of pier area) from the Ferry dock. Looked to be about a 1/4 of a mile. Too far for two old ladies with mobility issues to walk. Captain announced there would be a shuttle, but it didn't start until 9:00am and that's the time the ferry leaves for Sorrento. Next ferry wasn't until 11:00 am and we didn't want to be that late leaving.

We ended up hiring a taxi (at approx. 8:30 am) to take us to Pompeii (wait 2 hours for us), then on to Sorrento for about 3 hours, then back to Naples. He stopped if we wanted to stop, took photos of us, escorted us across the busy street in Sorrento, carried our packages (it was like watching "The Lives of the Rich and Famous" on TV, but we were living it). He even threw in a short tour of the main sights in Naples before returning us to the ship at 4:00 pm in time for departure. He wasn't hard on the eyes either.

Have a Plan "A", then have a Plan "B" for when "A" falls apart. And then, even be prepared to go with the flow when "A" and "B" both fall apart.

Have a great trip!

Thank you, Eleanor, for this info. Looks like you had a great day. I like your attitude re: Plans. I will try and remember it when things do not go as planned.

Thanks again. Ginette.

You're very welcome Ginette. After 7 various trips (land and cruise) to Europe, I've found it's the only way to look at "plans". And it will definitely make your trip more enjoyable.

Have a great trip!

Thank you all. We are also planning to take the ferry to sorrento Maybe we can form group?

I formed a group with my roll call a couple years ago. We were 4 couples with a private driver from AP Tours. We were picked up at the pier for a full day Amalfi drive tour. We stopped at Ravello, Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento. Had lunch in Sorrento while our driver bought our ferry tickets to return to Naples. A fabulous day and not that expensive with a few couples. The drive is spectacular.

Hello! That is exactly what we want to do! Right now, I'm planning on DIY with the ferry and train but wondering...do you remember what you paid the taxi for the day?

We had visited the Amalfi coast and Pompeii before so did something completely different this September.

The Regal Princess was docked beside the ferry dock. We had breakfast outside the Horizon Court and could see the ferries come and go right beside us. We made sure to be on the 9am hydrofoil because it went to Sorrento at only 9am or 11am (took about 40 minutes to cross). After we bought our tickets, there was some confusion about where to stand to catch the hydrofoil until a port employee walked by shouting which 'number' to stand behind. From the Sorrento waterfront, we took the elevator to the cliff above for 1euro pp. Shopped a bit and had a quick bite at the square of beer and bruschetta. Then we took the train to Herculaneum and, after visiting the site, another train back to Naples. If doing this loop, I'd recommend getting a taxi back to the ship from the Naples train station (or find out where to catch a port shuttle before leaving the ship) instead of walking all the way back to the ship like we did:eek: It was more than a mile and not a pleasant walk. Returned to the ship 45 minutes before all aboard time. Great day!

We did this tr ip in September from Celebrity Reflection. It is essential to check ferry timetable on line before travelling. The booking office only takes cash and you need to book the return trip at the time of booking the outward journey. We got 9am ferry and next one wasn't until 11 as I recall. Came back about 2/2.30

Thank you all so much for your tips to Sorrento. Sorrento does sound like a great place to visit. This will be our first time EVER to Europe. What are the names of their beaches?

Have a plan B ready. The Med in May can be cold!

There is a fixed fare of 220 Euros for a full day with a taxi, round trip from Naples to the Amalfi Coast and back.

Fare charts can be downloaded from the city of Naples's web site; the third PDF below the cartoon is in English.

http://www.comune.napoli.it/flex/cm/pages/ServeBLOB.php/L/IT/IDPagina/1193

Thanks for the link! I came upon this when I was first planning our trip a couple months ago but couldn't find it again. And, I hadn't noticed the all day option.

So, a couple questions...the all day option "TOUR COSTIERA (Positano-Ravello-Amalfi-Sorrento-return trip, unlimited time and return the same day)" for E220 does not mention Pompeii. Do you know if we want to combine Pompeii with it, should we expect E220 plus E90 (the Pompeii rate)?

We are only thinking of doing this if we meet a couple others on board that would want to split the cost of the taxi for the day. Otherwise, we are taking the ferry over to Sorrento and then the train to Pompeii. If we do this, we may consider taking a taxi from Pompeii back to the ship (if we're tired or time is tight and we don't want to deal with the train).

Does anyone know how much just the one-way taxi would be Pompeii back to the port? And, are there usually taxis waiting in the Pompeii area (that haven't already been hired)?

Thanks!

Hi! Just curious which train station you got off on in Naples? Like you, I recommend having your bearings on directions beforehand, with the station & port highlighted on a map (could be easy to get lost) . . . I hear there's a tram from the port to the station, which would be good. Glad to hear you had a great time!

I would never pay an additional 90 Euro for a stop at Pompei. You should first tell the driver that you want to make the stop within the fixed fare of Euro 220. If he balks I'd find another driver, because they have to pass Pompei on the way down and on the way back so it would not be out of the way.

There are taxis at Pompei but they are not covered by the Naples fixed fare set up; furthermore, you will pay for a round trip fare because they cannot pick up a fare in Naples. In other words, you'll be in the 100 Euro range.

I understand wanting to avoid the Circumvesuviana train back from Naples but a taxi is an expensive alternative. You could get the bus at 4 PM and be back in Naples after a comfortable ride by 4:35. The bus depot is a Molo Immacolatella Vecchia, a one-third of a mile walk inside the port from the cruise port.

This is what we want to do on the upcoming cruise.

As a starting point, can you share how much was the fare?

Do you know how much a taxi would be to stop at the ruins for 2 hours then drive to Sorrento and be dropped off (we would take the hydrofoil back). Also how long of a drive was it back to the port and was there a lot of traffic? Thanks!
