Smoking and Drinking on Navigator

Just come back from cruise on Navigator. Enjoyed my cruise very much but I am going to have a moan ...

Drinking

+++++

I know that it is easy to unwittingly have one to many. I have done it myself but taken care not to repeat. However, it did seem that due to the popularity of the drinks packages, there was one too many drunk passengers on board the ship and it is a trend that troubles me.

Smoking

++++++

Smokers cross the line when their habits impact or intrude on others. The casino has now become a smokers lounge where there are just too many smokers and not enough ventilation. For all practical purposes a no go zone has been created.

There has to be a balance and sometimes the demeanour of some smokers is seriously selfish and inconsiderate.

What annoyed me most was seeing one person on a mobility scooter with oxygen, lighting up.

There you go. I have had a moan and feel better for it. :)

I agree that ship casinos are now the smoking lounge. On many ships the smoke rolling out of the casino also contaminates nearby areas of the ship. RCI needs to go to a complete no smoking inside the ship policy as X has.

Last yr. on the Serenade there were 2 nonsmoking nights....which I really liked....did the Navigator have that?[/QUOT

I thought they eliminated non-smoking formal nights when they started banning balcony smoking? In any event, while that did stop active smoke, the stench was still strong enough to permeate my hair and clothes. Yuck.

I agree, I've not seen a non-smoking night in the casino in several years.

I haven't either. I wonder if they ditched the smoke-free night when they change the ship-wide smoking policy back in 2014. Now the casinos have "smoking sections". I don't recall there being sections, what I do remember are smoke-free tables. At least it kept the person next to you from blowing smoke in your face. Not a very good compromise.

In general, I expect there to be smoking in a casino. It's just part of the gambling atmosphere.

If they got rid of it, gambling revenue would drop.

I also wish casino was non smoking, many people avoid it because of the smoke, when we did Princess a few years ago they had a non-smoking night in the casino, it had a much larger crowd that night. I think is rare for someone to be drunk even with package.

That may have been true in the past, but times have changed. Many smoke free casinos now that are very successful. Many cruisers would love to gamble, but just can't tolerate the smoke (me included). Conversely, nothing stops smokers from continuing to gamble. They just have to step away for a smoke break on occasion like they do just about everywhere else in the States now.

Not really a matter of IF the Casinos will go smoke free, but WHEN. In the mean time, allowing only active gamblers to smoke, but not those ducking in just to light up would be a step forward.

Only for a short period of time. They'd get my husband, who loves to gamble but cannot because he would have to strip (and throw away his clothes) and shower before coming back to our room, and ships (and casinos in general) frown on that. And I bet there are many many people that would be happy to be there because of getting rid of the smoke.

Heck, people who don't smoke don't have the righteously insane expense of cigarettes so they might have more money for other vices like gambling! :)

I have seen many drunk people on cruise ships. They walk as if the ship is rocking even though it is totally smooth.

I do not drink, and I watch people. The amount of alcohol some people consume amazes me. If I were to drink that much, I would be dead.

They are well over the 'legal limit' and probably 2-3 times what they should be drinking. But because of the unlimited drinks, they just drink more and more.

Totally agree about the rudeness of the smokers. On last Oasis cruise earlier this month, I had one RUDE girl blowing smoke in my face because she wanted to play on the slot machine I was on!! It got so bad, I reported her to the casino manager, who did nothing except tell me to go play on the non-smoking side, if smoke bothered me!!! Makes no difference if you go to the non-smoking side anyway because the smokers smoke on their side, THEN they come over to the non-smoking side reeking of smoke. You cannot get away from it. There was also a woman who was smoking on the non-smoking side (almost right in front of the casino host desk, which is clearly in the non-smoking area). I (nicely) asked her to put out her (LONG) cigarette because she was in the non-smoking area. She told me no because there was no LAW saying she couldn't be there, and besides she paid RCCL dearly to stay in a suite, so, in her words, she "would do whatever she wanted to do and there was nothing I could do about it...get over it!!" Nice woman, wouldn't you say? Her husband then joined her in the non-smoking area smoking a huge nasty cigar. We gave up, went to our room, and called it a night. Can't and won't fight it anymore. If RCCL won't do anything about it, then they lose our casino revenue. There are other things we can do on the ship than be exposed to rude and uncaring people. We also witnessed EVERY NIGHT people coming into the casino, sitting down at a slot machine, not put in the first penny, but rather just sat there to smoke. Again more lost revenue for the casino, since people who wanted to play those machines, couldn't because the smokers would sit there, smoke and many times, get free drinks. Whew...I've put in my two cents for the day!!

My experience is that casino smoking is less evident on cruises that are 7+ nights and/or are higher priced. In fact, on our January 2016 B2B on Freedom, we noticed less smoking on the higher-priced Eastern Caribbean itinerary as opposed to the Western the following week. There was also a non-smoking formal night on the Eastern and not the Western.

Personally, while I dislike smoking in general, it doesn't really bother me. Smoking is part of the gambling atmosphere. But I'd be happy if RCL banned it and if Vegas and other gambling venues followed suit. Many of the casino employees would be happy too as I've seen them grimace when a player lights up.

They will never do that, lose toi much custom and I'm not a smoker

I was just on the Serenade and they did have 2 non smoking nights, on the formal nights, in the casino. I really didn't seem to notice much difference on those nights in the amount of people in there playing.

I am a smoker, yet am used to only smoking outside so when we would leave our cabin and head to the elevators on deck 9, you could smell the smoke seeping up from the casino on deck 6. It was always very strong and usually a smoker won't really notice that. They allowed smoking in a covered outside area on deck 11 and deck 5 and I think that's very reasonable.....there's chairs and ashtrays there and it's expected in that area.

What surprised me is the amount of people using the vapor cigarettes....they tend to use them constantly....with almost no break! I can't help but wonder how this helps? Many of them have a strong scent...vanilla, clove, etc.....and I thought this was nauseating after awhile. These people used these on their balconies and in any non smoking areas....I don't understand why those are accepted instead.

Oh well, I may be told to get a life but just wanted to share my opinion too :)

Vapor cigarettes are included in the no smoking policy, including balconies. Have found that the staff does nothing about the use. Very prevalent in the solarium when I was on the Serenade earlier this.

Maybe that's that persons type of fun. I know my favorite part of the cruise is drinking, gambling, smoking and eating! Just because that's not your cup of tea doesn't give you the right to down it.

On one hand, I try to be considerate when I'm at the table smoking by blowing it up or away from other players. I understand some people are more sensitive to the smoke. But do you not remember a time no long ago where it was completely normal to light up practically anywhere on a cruise ship, airplane, restaurant, doctors office? I bet you didn't complain back then because it was the norm.

The fact is let people have fun and you have your own fun as well. Don't worry yourself about other people for differences in the way they are enjoying themselves on vacation.

What is the "legal limit" on a cruise ship ? I wouldn't want to break the law.

How did you come up with a factor of 2 - 3 times what a person should consume in alcohol ? Do you bring special equipment onboard to conduct your test ?

There's no way they were getting free drinks unless they were Club Royale VIP's!! (and had free drinks as one of their comps or had a drink package.)

There are NO free drinks on Cruise ship casinos unless they are VIP'S.
