my husband and i are cruising on the splendour in November.the drinks package seems quite expensive .However we although not quite alcoholics do enjoy a bottle of wine with our meals and maybe a cocktail or two with a night cap to end the day(perhaps should join AA when we return!!)Any advise would be really appreciated

Search on the RCL board. This has been discussed in detail and threads include what drinks are included and how people manage to drink enough to break even. For most people it is the convenience of not having to continiually sign. Not too many people say they save money by buying the package. Only you can know how much you normally drink. Don't forget to factor in the port days where you are off the ship. I believe both people in the cabin have to take the drink package, so there is no sharing. Also, I remember reading that you need to consume about 7 drinks every day to break even.

Compare the prices for the drinks you will consume with the cost of the package.

Funny I just posted about this, but just now saw your thread.
I take it you are a first time cruiser? It all depends on what types of drinks and how much you think you might consume. I read that you like to buy wine at dinner and have a drink at the end of the day. You are similar to DH and I. We also like to have a cigar or two on our balcony after dinner sometimes. That is usually paired with a cognac or nice Scotch. Remember that when paying individually for drinks, gratuities add to the cost (I assume RC does similar to Carnival). That can add up really fast because it is very convenient to put it on your sign & sail card... which can be way larger than you expect at the end of your trip. Every little thing adds up. I look at it this way--it is an insurance policy to keep you from going over that amount, if you want to go the higher-end of the rail and wine racks. It also gives you flexibility to splurge on a nicer vintage and/or vineyard of wine with dinner. You may not drink that $ amount every day on the cruise (esp in port) but when you're at sea sometimes the temptation for a nice drink while out on the Lido deck or in the piano bar is too much to resist. |
