Default ??? re Dover Priory train station.

Could someone please tell me if there are any shops around the train station . Reason is, we have a good 2hrs to kill before our train leaves, and if there is some shops near we could use the time to shop. .....Joan.

The railway station is up-hill from the town itself and the cruise port is really not within walking distance if you've got luggage. There were no shops around the station when we last visited in 2010.

Where are you travelling to? Can you not get an earlier train?

Yes we could get an earlier train but it's complicated. The people were staying with , in Portsmouth ,are not available earlier, also if we leave earlier we will have 4 changes to make. Anyway I have my answer re shops, and we will just have to work with what we have, no big deal. Really appreciate such a quick reply. thanks so much....Joan.

Has anyone a suggestion re a little sight seeing for an hour or so? Where would we be able to get a bus or such to see some of the area? Thanks.

If you want to go slowly to Portsmouth why not just take the National Express bus from Dover to Portsmouth with a single change of bus at London Victoria.
Save yourself a lot of money too.

Default not working

Thanks but the National Express is just not working for me! I've spent 20 frustrating mins trying to get from Dover to Portsmouth and it just is not recognizing PMS/Portsmouth etc, so I,m sticking with the train.

Works for me too, first time.
Don't enter Dover Cruise Terminal as your departure point, most days no National Express buses visit the cruise terminal - select Town Centre or Ferry Terminal.
If your trip is in the summer the National Express schedules and fares might not be up yet (by the same token, promotional train fares and schedules are only confirmed 3 months prior to travel)

Are you taking the train via Ashford International and Brighton or via Waterloo?

I would suggest taking an earlier train from Dover and breaking your journey at Ashford. The station has a left luggage and there is a big shopping outlet (google Mc Arthur Glen) five minutes easy walk from the station. If you are not changing trains at Ashford as part of your route then just buy a single ticket from Dover to Ashford International then your main ticket as Ashford International to Portsmouth. It's about half hour from Dover to Ashford.

the ships in Dover are very unexciting, they aren't that far from the station though. We stopped at Stratford for the Westfield (a large modern mall) last time and it was better.

Stratford is nice and directly adjacent to the Stratford International Station but not sure on left luggage facilities there and its not technically the right direction for connecting stations for your destination I think). Big plus is that it's totally under cover thought from the station to the mall.

There are luggage facilities at the Stratford Westfield and it is an easy walk from the train station. It is a pretty decent mall all things considered, with lots of restaurants, a food court (small), a Marks and a John Lewis.

The main problem is that once the OP has got to Stratford, it's not going to be particularly easy to get to Portsmouth from there, especially if they were only looking to kill two hours.
