Silly Concern, I Know

but I am about our upcoming cruise. DH and I are smokers (actually DH has quit recently, and I'm working on it). Anyway, during our cruises we have never smoked in our cabins, but have on the balcony. During the last cruise, there were at least three times when we returned to our room to find an air ionizer, or whatever its called, plugged in. We asked the steward about it and was told it was because we were smoking in our cabin. We informed him we have never smoked in our cabin, but he didn't seem to care. My concern is, now with the new policy in effect, we'll get another steward who swears we're smoking in the cabin and will be charged the $250 fee. If we were doing something we shouldn't that's one thing, but I don't want to be charged for something I'm not doing nor have ever done. I'm not trying to start a debate, guess I'm just seeking a little reassurance. Thanks all!

No, the only time we may have the door open is at night while sleeping.

Starting October 9, people can't smoke off their balconies. I'm sorry you won't be able to smoke off your balcony again in your upcoming trips. There are too many people complaining that it ruins the point of balcony if you smell smoking. That is a Plus for me, but maybe not for you.

The odor can get into your clothing, maybe that was what they were smelling? A can of Febreeze may help, just in case.

A smoker's clothes will retain the tobacco odor, so when you re-entered your cabin from the balcony, you brought that smell with you. The steward was probably responding to the odor in your cabin that lingered on your clothes.

+1 on the Febreeze recommendation. It's always worked wonders for me as a cigar smoker.

That's probably what it is, I work with a guy who smokes outside, no smoking in the building, but he has that smokers smell about him, you would swear he is smoking in his office but he's not. The smell is a lot more noticeable to non-smokers. Concrats tho your husband for being able to quit.

On my last cruise, my cabin had an unidentifiable odor and was afraid the steward would think I'd been smoking there. I brought it to his attention on day 1. It was an OV.

The $250 cleaning fee has been around as long as they haven't allowed smoking in the cabins.

Yep, 2011. I remember because I was a smoker back then. When we received the notice DW asked if I wanted to cancel, we had a balcony cabin and smoking was still allowed on the balcony. We went anyway and had a great time. Even if they had banned smoking on the balcony we still would have gone.

Oh I see, since the 2011 change there have been lots of "cleaning fees" for smoking in the cabins, I know a couple ppl personally that have been "caught".

I also believe it may be the clothing. I use to smoke (1 yr smoke free this month) and my DH always said he could smell the smoke on me, even though I smoked outside. Since I have stopped smoking I can now smell smoke on my co-workers who have smoked outside and then came into the office. I never noticed before.

I agree with all the above posters. I have a friend who smokes and when they bring their suitcases in the house you can smell the smoke. When I visit their house everything I bring home smells like smoke. You are probably accustomed to the smell and immune. Unfortunately it does not go away easily, much like a home you move in when someone has been smoking in it or a package you might get from a home with a smoker.

You have, however, brought up a truly good point though. You should not be penalized if you are smoking in the allowed areas and bring the smell to your cabin. My heavens, even going to the casino can bring the smell into your cabin whether you smoke or not. I am not sure how they will deal with this.

They are not dangerous/harmful and are used in many homes/office's.

its the cloths, I quit 14 years ago, but if I spend a night in the casino the jeans I wear reek, they do make the room smell. I try to put them out on the balcony to air out.

Febreze may help a little, but there is another solution. If you get naked before you go out to smoke, then you won't have to worry about the smell getting in your clothing.:o

Most ionizers are ozone generators. Concentrated ozone is not good for many things, including but not limited to plastics, rubbers, and human lung tissue.
