LongIsCruiser Posted November 5, 2014 #1 Share Posted November 5, 2014 Having a grand time on the Allure despite bad weather the past few days.... Was chatting with a fellow on the Labadeee buffet line who said "200 people were sick from insect bites on Jamaica last week on a cruise ship". Was that accurate? Traveling with children we just want to be safe....
dcgrumpy Posted November 5, 2014 #2 Share Posted November 5, 2014 (edited) 200 people on one ship? I highly doubt that. I think it would have made the news. And if they're talking about chikungunya, it normally takes 4-8 days for symptoms to show up. Edited November 5, 2014 by dcgrumpy

poss Posted November 5, 2014 #6 Share Posted November 5, 2014 Rather than depending on what people say on CC (or other such sites), why not google CDC and WHO and other such organizations? Both of our physicians have strongly advised not going to Jamaica (or the other hardest hit islands) because of the rampant chikungunya epidemic (the word "epidemic" is used by Jamaica's own newspapers and health organizations). But we are in our late 70's, so younger folks presumably have less to be concerned about. The disease however is extremely nasty. Remember that the mosquitoes whose bite spreads the disease is out in the day rather than in the evening hours. I hope the rest of your weather is Caribbean wonderful and that you have a safe trip in every way.
SRV FAN Posted November 5, 2014 #7 Share Posted November 5, 2014 (edited) We were in Falmouth on Oct 16th. Didn't go out of the port area. I sat on a curb in the shade to check my emails (best spot for the wifi connection)... I had a dress on over my swimsuit... Felt a bite on my leg. Scratched it & saw a few ants on the ground.... Then in a second... Another bite... This one hurt... And kept hurting.... I went to the restroom close by to have a look..... I had a huge swollen bug bite on my leg! Stuck out maybe a half inch & was about an inch long. Scared me to death. Don't know what it was, and it went away within a few hours..so no worries... But I would suggest insect repellant at the very least! Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app Edited November 5, 2014 by SRV FAN
