Hi, we're onboard Hapag-Lloyd's Europa this week (both for the Ocean Sun Festival, its annual classical music festival, and for the Norwegian fjords ports!) and I'm happy to answer any questions you have on cruising on this iconic ship.

Please tell us what it feels like to be on the highest ranked cruise ship in the world. Tell us about your stateroom and the food, in particular. Is English spoken on this cruise, as well as German? Are the majority of cruisers German? What would be the passenger mix?

Hi, Marion. Great questions!
This is our second time on Europa (first was five years ago or so) and it does not feel all that much different than luxury cruises on Silversea, Regent, Crystal. The ship itself is old, laughing as I type this, but it is 13 years old and so does not have the same bells, whistles, modern stuff as, say, Seabourn´s newest trio (which I like very much). Very comfortable, very, very well maintained. Though I don´t really buy the hype that Europa is the world´s best cruise ship (that´s the opinion of one veteran cruise reviewer, who I respect, but don´t necessarily agree that there is ONE best) but it is very different. We are on a bilingual cruise and the main speakers are able to give lecturers in English as well as German but everything else, including any discussions related to classical music theme (which is marvelous) is in German, and entertainment is in German. So you have to either know German, want very much to learn German, or just ... say hang it and pick up a book when you don´t know what is going on. The crew all speak great English and have been, mostly, quite wonderful. No North Americans on board but met a lovely couple from Hong Kong-Germany and another from Belgium. Food is insanely good. I´ll venture to say possibly the best I have had on a ship in ages, if not ever. Carolyn Quote:
