Final Payment Time...Cruise Insurance Vent.....

For about the 23rd time I just paid off my upcoming cruise and added cruise/trip insurance. I am reminded that we have never, not one time, claimed a single thing!! We have paid enough money in cruise insurance to have paid for another cruise, maybe two. But, we are scared to death to not get insurance because, for sure, if we don't get it this time, this will be the cruise where I break both my legs and need air evacuation home or we will miss the ship in Belize and it will cost us $10,000 to get back to the ship or home!! UGH!!!!

Anyone else go through this misery at final payment time??

Our 19th cruise will be in January, plus we have flown all over Europe. We have never bought any type of trip insurance and we are way ahead even if something were to happen this time. We do what we can to mitigate risk like arriving a day early when we cruise from a distant port, but in the end we are "self insured." We don't buy extended warrantes on appliances or cars either.

It isn't the amount, it's generally very reasonable and we can easily afford it, but it's that we have purchased it 23 times and never used it once....and for that, I am grateful.

I so wanted to skip it this time, but felt the weight of the WHAMMY hanging over my head and agreed to pay for it one more time. :D

I wish we had started out saying no, then it wouldn't be so hard to say no now! I applaud your street smarts!

I feel the same every time I pay my home owners and automobile insurance premiums.

In 20+ years, I have never made a claim against either. The day I don't pay for the coverage will be the day I need it. :)

This comes up everytime in insurance threads, but it's not a perfect analogy. Don't buy warranty on appliance and it breaks, you are out the cost of the appliance. Don't buy trip insurance and things go badly wrong, you might not just be out the cost of the trip but maybe 50,000.00 to get home an injured person. Then you wouldn't be "way ahead" any longer........

We vacation 4-5 times per year but only cruise once per year. I don't mind buying trip insurance for those annual cruises, it's maybe 140.00 for the three of us. I can blow that in a bad 20 minutes at the casino:D The rest of our trips are in Florida, Vegas, etc and we don't insure those.

And no we don't buy extended warranties on cars or applicances;)

No, we just add it to our cruise at time of booking. It is a little less painless because we look at the total due. Also, as we book way out, we pay a little at a time to get the final payment to smaller amount.

And, we always get insurance too. It provides a little piece of mind.

We do exactly the same thing. Never give insurance a second thought since it is part of the booking process and we wouldn't dream of not getting it.

That's why I've been buying a multi-trip yearly policy for a few years. I feel it's a much better value and you just have to do it once a year.

I like your thought, BUT, I hope you can afford up to $250K for emergency evacuation. RC's insurance is only $25K evacuation, hardly enough to get you home from Nassau let alone India.

Also RC and many other insurance plans, the medical is SECONDARY while a few other on travel insurance web site medical is primary.

We had a small ships doctor bill back in the last week of may, turned in to BC and waited, waited, finally called, it was put on back burner because of something I left out(not notified) finally after many calls(no one new that cruise ship is not international travel) finally early August, got some reimbursement, sent those papers to Ayon RC's insurance company, received email saying they received it, still waiting.

Have done more than 50 cruises. Bought insurance on all of them. Had to use it on #48. Won't leave home without it :)

We've only used it once. Our flight was cancelled from FLL because storms in the northeast so here we were stuck in Florida of all places. I almost felt guilty submitting a claim for food and lodging.

Edit: OK twice. Last May we almost lost my Mom so we never felt guilty putting in that claim. Can't believe I forgot that one.

I misspoke in a previous post, we did buy trip insurance once that wasn't for a cruise. Buying tickets on airtran a couple years ago just before clicking "purchase" the site offered "trip insurance" for a total of 35-40.00 for the three of us. On a whim I clicked yes and paid it.

6 months later we had the trip from hell getting home from Florida. Blizzards, ice storms, -20 degrees........ Flight delays, flight cancellations....... We were going to be stuck in Atlanta for days. Rented a car and drove back to Detroit where our car was. Insurance paid all the car rental, motel, meal costs. Got a check no questions asked for almost 700.00. I guess insurance isn't always a bad idea;)

Oh yeah, it was a drive I'll never forget:eek::D

Do you have car insurance or homeowners insurance?

Insurance is just that, insurance against an unforeseeable incident.

For many years we have paid for all types of insurance including home owners insurance, and never filed a claim. A few years ago we returned form a wonderful cruise from San Diego, through the Panama Canal, to Florida. In total spent over 21 days on vacation. After arriving back in our home state and driving a few hours home from the airport, exhausted we walked into our home at about 2:00 AM. We spent the next few hours calling the police, filling our reports, asked a thousand questions, and at about 7:00 AM we went to bed. While we were gone, someone entered our home caused over $25000 damage and stole of $10000 in property.

That is why we have insurance to make us whole after a situation.

We have taken over 25 cruises, all with insurance. In fact, I am in the process of researching insurance for our next 4 cruises, using the website beginning with "INSURE******"

Just like the old American Express Commercial, "Never leave home without it."

While I have never needed insurance for an event while on a cruise, my sister and I did use it prior to embarkation. Just a few weeks before we were to leave for a cruise to Alaska, our mother (and cruise partner) was hospitalized and we had to cancel. We saved plenty of $$ by having the insurance! Our only out-of-pocket expense was the cost of the insurance. We NEVER travel without it!

I almost decided not to get it for my upcoming trip. Thanks to the wonderful people on this site, I found out I can shop for my own. My TA was gonna charge $208 for me and my son (age 15 - $104 each). Turns out, my son can be covered for free since he's travelling with me. Total cost $93!

I will always get it.:D

We always, always buy insurance and never need it, but this year I'm so glad we did, we booked a year in advance for our Adventure of the seas trip on 17th August and a week in Orlando, and bought the insurance at time of booking.

I am so glad we did as I had a heart attack on July 5th and doctor gave us the go ahead 4 days before we were due to fly out and because we had the insurance in place, we were fully covered for everything wether the doctor let us go or not

Try to keep the insurance cost down by not covering things such as your pre cruise hotel and your plane tickets. You should be able to cancel the hotel and pay a change fee for the tickets.

You might also want to get non cruise line insurance, which often has a cancel for any reason clause and is therefore more expensive.

We try to keep the amount we insure for last minute cancellation to a minimum. We are willing to take a hit for some of the cruise and precruise expenses. By having some insurance we get everything else covered including the dreaded medical and evacuation costs.
