Smoke

How bad is the smoke really on the getaway? A lot of reviews mention it. I'm allergic and I'm wondering how this will impact our trip? We haven't booked yet so this has us thinking twice. This focus on smoking areas all around the ship seems so outdated to me. Most cruise lines have all but eliminated smoking. I just don't get it.

Thanks for your helpful response.

I'm glad I could be of help. There is a button that says "search" up top if you type in smoke you will find 28,763 posts about it. If smoke bothers you so much that you just "don't get it" you really need to look into complely smoke free envioments because believe it or not smoking IS ALLOWED in designated areas.

Wow. Can't believe you all find my question so offensive. You know you have the option to not respond especially since you didn't actually provide any information. I was hoping some of the reviews were exaggerated since you basically can't smoke anywhere these days. Seems strange a cruise line would cater to smokers since so many find it offensive. There are lots of reports about people not staying in the smoking areas and the staff not enforcing it. I wonder why someone would be so inconsiderate especially since there are dedicated areas.

The fact that you can't seem to be bothered to read the massive amount of existing discussion on the topic is equally offensive.

It's been discussed. Search, read, then formulate your opinion on what you should expect.

Omg this has been played out a million times already. I'm sure you can find a completely smoke free ship some place. If you don't like it don't cruise NCL or any smoking cruise line. They have cut back on smoking areas they took away smoking on balconies this past november. You give an arm they want a leg SMH

Well obviously you wouldn't be able to tell from the responses to this tread but sometimes people tend to overreact on cruise critic. I was hoping to hear from some who didn't have issues with smoke. I'm guessing that isn't going to happen.

If your allergic why would you even take a chance and spend $1,000s ?

Because we have been on 11 cruises on 4 lines and never smelled smoke once. I was surprise to learn that was not the case on NCL so I was hoping a lot of people may have been over reacting.

NO ONE can predict what you will experience, nor how you will be impacted. It varies from cruise to cruise how many smokers there will be and if they obey the rules.

Why risk your health? If you believe"most cruise lines have all but eliminated smoking", why the heck are you focusing on NCL? Disney is totally smoke free!

I have no idea what the other smoking threads say, but my experience is that it varies from cruise to cruise. On our most recent cruise on the Star, there were a lot of people smoking in the designated areas. That's fine, they're allowed to do that, but it did make those areas not as pleasant to walk through. At least on the Star, though, it was fairly easy to avoid the smoking areas. Not sure about other ships.

Our main problem on that cruise was the jerks on the balcony next door to us smoked a LOT. No, you're not allowed to smoke on your balcony. Yes, I complained to Guest Services, but it appeared as if they did nothing, because the smoking continued right up until the cruise ended.

So bottom line, you might get lucky with a fairly smoke-free cruise, or you could have lots of smokers and/or rude smokers on the balcony next to you (assuming you have a balcony stateroom). If it really is a serious issue for you, I agree that it might be best to choose a different line.

ETA: Just saw Post #21. I agree, sorry to repeat.

I haven't been on the Getaway but, on the ships I've have sailed, the only indoor area where smoking is allowed is the casino. Some ships also have a cigar bar which is completely closed in. There are a few outdoor areas where smoking is also allowed. If you walk through the casino you'll smell smoke but, for me, it's never been an issue anywhere else.

We have only sailed the Gem since the policy change and we were able to smoke in our Garden Villa outdoor area. The smoke on the Breakaway and I assume the GA is only offensive ( yes even to a smoker) in the Casino but it is easy to avoid.

If you travel aside from cruising you will find that smoking is very widely accepted outside the U.S . We stayed at 5 star hotels numerous time in the past year in Dubrovnik, Punta Cana various countries all allow smoking on balconies.

I agree with Patrick (p&l) if smoke bothers you got to Celebrity enjoy whatever you do
