Scooter use in the islands ---

Recommended Posts

I am trying to convince DH about taking one of the more portable scooters on our cruise. It comes apart easily, individual pieces not too heavy and can be taken on the tenders.

Just wondering how difficult getting around Bora Bora, Moorea, Fanning Island, Raiatea, Nuku Hiva and Rarotonga would be ?

We went ashore with our scooter at Rarotonga and Moorea. Rarotonga offered a long harbourside walk past a market, souvenir shops and restaurants and in the fine and not too hot weather we enjoyed this. There were the usual problems with kerbs without ramps on the shop side of the road but the harbouside path is level, our battery coped well with the "walk" and we are used to dealing with this. We ate ashore in an Indian restaurant with a pleasant garden. On Moorea we took a boat trip across the bay to an area where rays waited for feeding - I did this while H watched with great amusement. LOvely scenery on the way there and back. Very helpful crew getting the scooter on and off the flat bottomed boat as there was nowhere secure to leave it on shore. There were cars for hire and island tours on offer but the buses for these did not have storage for the scooter.

We did not need to take the scooter apart for tendering - the Princess crew were excellent and picked it up in one piece - only asking us to be patient and wait to be last on and first off as with air travel. We did need to consult with the shore excursion and reception staff to get advice on using the back of house staff lifts to get down to the tender platform deck. Others had to line up and use the stairs for this last stage. Every ship is different but do check it out.

Enjoy - Colleen
