Alaskan Cooking

Catch a few thousand hooligan fish, dig a pit, put the fish in, bury them, leave 10 days, remove, boil, use the stinky oil to flavor all of your cooking.

Seriously, that's what we were told and saw happening on the Chilkoot river. We passed a Tlingit town and they were boiling their hooligans. Very authentic but I wouldn't eat it! Homemade hooligan oil is the flavoring of choice with the natives.

I got a "local" cookbook like you're talking about in the Purple Moose in Skagway. It's from the people of the "Seldovia Village Tribe", recipies for bear, salmon and normal things like peanut butter cookies.

Just returned, and there were a number of cookbook choices. Found a cookbook from the editors of Milepost - recipes from roadhouses, lodges, and B&B's thoughout BC and Alaska. The recipes look good, reasonably priced, and a diverse selection.

btw - on the bus trip to Whittier - the driver pointed out people catching hooligan at one of the waterways - he didn't go into detail how they were prepared though.
