Cap-aux-Meules hop-on, hop-off bus

Just back from a visit via Holland's Maasdam. We were the first ship of the season.

Our ship's tour was cancelled due to low "interest", so we went ahead on our own.

We took one of the first tenders into the dock area (by the ferries) and went right into a nice tourist center (free wifi by the way). The clerks were very nice and helpful and outfitted us with wristbands for the FREE hop on-hop off bus. The buses are fairly small (ours held about 25-30 people) and run every 30 minutes. Island tour takes 60 minutes. Great way to get a feel for the area and to stop and explore anything that catches your interest.

When we got on the bus, there was no waiting and it took some time to fill it up. When we got off, there was a line of 60-80 people to get on and obviously quite a wait. They did add another, larger bus, but it still was not enough.

So, while this is a good deal, be sure to get there early. The Maasdam only has about 1200 passengers and even this number was too much for them to handle.

As a follow up to Dave's statements, he is correct. Get there early as the buses are small. We were on one that resembled a Hertz airport van.

Also, prior to our cruise, I called their tourism dept. an was told it would cost 15 CAD and it turned out to be free because they were doing some work in the port.

The ships tours are not worth it. You get to see the same things with this bus. Truthfully, there is not much to see on the island. F.Y.I. if you get off at a stop, it may be difficult to get back on the next bus as they leave the port full. You may have to wait for a few to arrive or until a little later when the crowds thin out.
