Swimming in Ocean in Brazil

My husband and I will be heading to Brazil and were planning on doing some swimming and snorkeling in Ilha Grande and at the Copacabana Beach in Rio, but someone warned us about the terrible pollution in the ocean around Brazil. Has anyone swam in either of those places and if so, how was it? Thanks!

There are lots of people that swim at Copacabana, so if you choose to do so you will probably be fine. I chose not to due to having heard of the pollution and "super bugs" (bacteria) there. However, it is very pretty to walk, have a drink, etc.

You should be able to swim at Ilha Grande and any other Brazilian ports without worrying about those problems.
