Currency in Montevideo

Will be on a cruise next month and stopping in Montevideo. Just wondering what currencies do the shops and restaurants near the cruise port accept? I have both U.S. $ and ARS $. Can you easily change U.S.$ into UYU $ ?

US more useful than Argentine. We did not have any problems, a street kiosk even rang up US, change was local of course.

We found it easy with the assistance of a convenient ATM. There is a really nice shopping area across the street from the pier.

In 2015 we found that a number of the shops and restaurants accepted Argentinian and US currency. Signs listing the exchange rate were prominently posted. Major US credit cards were also widely accepted.

A lot of places do accept US. The restaurants in the market, have the exchanges listed. Excellent food there. :)

We recently spent seven days in Uruguay. Loved it.

Don't use cash for hotels or restaurants.

IF you pay with a foreign credit card you will not have to pay any VAT tax. So, when we paid our restaurant bills with our credit card we had the tax that was included in the menu prices reversed out of the bill. Worked out to a 20 percent discount.

The shops take USD, Argentine pesos, and of course Uruguan pesos. We usually use local currency as a measure of respect.
