Hobart car rental near dock

We will be docking on Hal in Hobart. There appears to be downtown car rental agency with locations only a few blocks from the dock. Any suggestions on rentals?

We then plan to drive to Port Arthur and stopping at the Tasmanian Devil rescue/zoo on the way? Any other ideas.

Hi semlohah

there are a few rental companies near the docks, Thrifty in Argyle St and Avis in Market Place, both are just a few minutes walk from the docks. Google both and you'll see how close :-) Others probably deliver to the docks or arrange pickups.

You would definitely need to book them as I'm sure they get booked out when cruise ships are in port.

Port Arthur is an easy drive from Hobart, around 1.20 hrs, and the Devil Park is just a few minutes before Port Arthur, so very easy to do in a day.

Lots of nice places to stop for a meal too, Bangor Wine & Oyster Shed at Dunalley, stunning views, great food and wines...you'll see plenty of good reviews if you google it.

There are other places worth a stop too, 5 mins before Port Arthur is Port Arthur Lavender its lovely , with distillery, visitor centre, self guided tour, café and gift shop...try lavender icecream :-)

Dunalley fish market...freshly cooked straight from the sea....Dunalley Waterfront café with lovey meals of just a coffee or wine.

You should have plenty of time to visit both the places you are interested in, plus have time to stop off at a few places before heading back to the docks.

Enjoy......Hobart and Tamania are lovely places, but I might be just a bit biased :-) Deb

We've cruised into Hobart twice and both times hired a car from Avis, its just a short 5 min walk from the ship. Definitely book online though as we saw many people being turned away because they only ordered in the number of cars they had bookings for (cars were coming in on car carrier trucks, being off loaded and given to people who had booked straight away).

On the way to or from Port Arthur, you will come across Federation Chocolate, worth a stop and taste (their apple chocolate is delicious and unique).
