Buying Euros

Recommended Posts

If you look over on the European Ports boards, you will see MANY discussions on this topic. The answer- ATMs in the country you are traveling to.

The exchange rate will be the lowest, fees generally will be the lowest. There are some variables- bank you use, etc, but a 5% reduction from getting Euros in the US is pretty standard. You could save almost 15%, depending on bank and method of getting the Euros. Standard safety recommendation- use ATMs physically inside a bank or other business, or before you pick up your luggage. These are the safest.

Many branches of that well-known auto club offer a "tip pack" with no upcharge.

If you're talking about AAA, it's generally acknowledged on these boards that their exchange rate is terrible. I'd consider them a last resort, on a par with changing in a hotel or at one of those kiosks on the street....
