Are 19 Year olds allowed in bars and lounges?

Hi,

We have a cruise booked on Carnival Breeze August 2, 2014. Our son will turn 19 the first sea day. We are Canadians and this is legal drinking age. While on a cruise out of Dover a few years ago all I had to do was sign a form with Celebrity for my daughter but understand this is not an option on Carnival. While the actual drinking is not an issue, I wouldn't want all of us to be going into a bar or lounge to enjoy entertainment and he not be allowed in. (He is the youngest of the group) Someone mentioned to me that I should switch to NCL where I can sign a form. However the ports of call available at the time are ones we have been to before. Any suggestions or anyone have experience with this? Thanks

I would call Carnival customer service and ask....but it's my guess that he would be allowed to go in? Alcohol is served all over the ship, so going into one of the bars I would think shouldn't be an issue? (I do know that they are pretty strict about the casino and age requirements.)

Don't know if it's the same on Carnival, but on DCL, 18 and above can go in any adult only areas (including the bars and lounges), just can't order alcohol.

I think you have the answer to your original question. He will be able to go in to most if not all lounge areas. Hope he enjoys the cruise.

Please make sure that you double check the policy regarding providing beverages to underage. Someone can probably give a link. Not saying that you are intending to do that. Just sayin'

Do any of the cruise lines that hold firm to 21 yr age limit for drinking on cruises that embark/debark in U.S. permit younger age drinking in Europe where the drinking age is younger?

I believe in the Med this year Disney allowed a parent to sign a form allowing an under 21 to drink alcohol, but the parent had to be present. I don't think they could just do it on their own.

On Carnival he is only restrictions are not being able to drink alcohol and cannot be on the Serenity deck. Both require you to be 21.

If he goes to the disco he should bring his ID to prove-up his age.

Our daughter was 18 on our cruise on Carnival, and she was allowed to go to the lounges with us, but no alcohol ordered by her. If she ordered something to drink it had to be NON alcoholic. We visited the late night comedy lounge quite a bit and she always got in. And I think she even accompanied her mother into the casino once on a sea day and no one questioned her.

Carnival does for ships doing European cruises only, not repo cruises.

Celebrity is 18 for cruises departing in South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand...though they might modify when the age limit is higher (ex Indonesia).

Yes, RCI and their Celebrity brand allow all adults of 18 years to drink on ships which are not sailing from the USA. There is no guardian signature, as an adult cannot have a guardian.

All European managed ships have 18 as both the booking and drinking age, eg Costa, Cunard, P&O etc.

For NCL you must be 18 and have parental consent to drink (beer and wine only) onboard while in international waters.

Carnival's policy is stricter, they have lost a few and several accidents because of excessive drinking from the under 21 group. I don't know if their policy is strictly enforced. I do know that a former classmate of my son went overboard on a Carnival ship and died at the age of 18. Heavy drinking was involved. Here's the current policy for Carnival:

Drinking Alcoholic Beverages

Guest must be 21 years of age or older to be served alcohol onboard. Proper I.D with birth date is required.

Casino / Bingo

Guest must be 18 years of age or older to play the tables and the slot machines.

Guests under 18 years of age are not permitted in the casino.

Guests must be 18 years of age to purchase a bingo card and play.

Spa Carnival and Fitness Center

Guests under 12 years of age are not permitted in these facilities.

Guests between the ages of 12 and 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Lounges, Shows and the Dance Club

Guests under the age of 18 should be accompanied by an adult in all public areas of the ship.

Guests under the age of 18 must vacate the dance club by 10:00pm.

Thank you all so much for the info.

Kcwingwalker, I can appreciate the enforcement on teen drinking. So sad that it can lead to such heartache.

My son is so personable and outgoing. Loves the comedy and the humour and music. I just don't want to take him on a vacation where he can't enter these areas to enjoy these things with us.

Greatly appreciate the input.

God Bless

The exact policy with RCI is 18 is the legal drinking age on board for sailings originating in Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America.

Sailings originating in North America the drinking age is 21.

There are no parental consent exceptions.

No worries, he will be allowed in the lounges without issue.

My kids are now 20 and 22, and they've been enjoying the music and activities in the bars/lounges for several years now. In fact, you'll see younger children at many of the events held there, such as trivia or the cruiseline's version of popular reality and game shows.

Enjoy your cruise! Bon Voyage!

Surely the cruise lines that cruise in Europe would allow drinking alcohol for over 18's as this is the legal age in most European countries. The cruise lines would miss out on some serious revenue if they only allow people over the age of 21 to drink. Im sure there would be many Europeans that would be disappointed after booking a cruise and finding they couldn't drink when they got onboard.
