Car rental

We're thinking about renting a car to tour the ruins on our own and spend some time at a beach as well. We're pretty adventurous but we'll have our two children with us and I don't want to do anything to put us at risk. Is it safe to rent a car and drive around this part of Mexico?

There's a couple of older threads on this board regarding car rentals. I believe the only rental available at the port is for jeeps and golf carts. But others may have had more recent experiences.

Most people who rent cars coming to Costa Maya/Mahahual do so at Cancun's airport.

Driving in Mexico is driving in Mexico. Precautions apply. Full Mexican insurance applies. Careful driver applies.

The ruins are over an hour, hour and an half away by car, with nothing much to see or places to stop in between. Unless you drive over to the Balacar Lagoon, I doubt if you'll have any beach time.
