White Pass RR - with cruise line or on your own?

Been reading the threads on the White Pass RR in Skagway and the issue of whether to do the RR through the cruise line or on your own through the RR website.

 

What do those of you who have been there think?

 

Also, for those who did it on your own,

 

(1) how far away is the RR depot (where you have to go to get the RR) and was it easy to get to?

 

(2) Did you have any problems making it back to the ship on time for departure? [i am on the Regal Princess in August and have to take the latest train - 4:30 - due to other excursions.
