St Jean Beach

This was discussed at length recently, with differing opinions. The walk is about 2 miles, over a high and steep hill, with limited sidewalks and local drivers who go very fast. It is certainly possible if you are in a good shape, but is very seldom done by island residents.

See the post about "beach chairs" for more details.

google maps walking directions estimates it at 31 minutes. They also state: "Use caution – This route may be missing sidewalks or pedestrian paths."

If you get tired on the way or need a drink, there is a supermarket across from the airport. Also stop on top of the hill and wait till a plane comes in. You will think it touches your head.

I wouldn't walk it because of the narrow road and the traffic. There is a pebble beach in Gustavia. Much easier to reach. You can also walk up to the fort, none of the beautiful people walk up there.

We sailed last month on the Celebrity Constellation and had a day in St. Barts. We decided to walk to St. Jean Beach from tender pier at Gustavia. The walk took around 45 minutes, and really wasn't that difficult. While the road was narrow in places, at no time did it feel unsafe to be walking. The one narrow portion is a one way street, however the few vehicles we encountered slowed down for us. As mentioned by others, there is a supermarket across from the airport $3 USD for a beer and $7 USD for a sandwich, if you want to load up before hitting the sand.

So glad to read this post about walking to St. Jeans beach. We're sailing next month on the Constellation and the excursions offered by the cruise line are either way too expensive or just not anything we're interested in.

We were there a couple of years ago and walked to Shell beach without any trouble.
