We returned last week from a wonderful week in Hawaii! We stayed in a 2 bedroom aft family suite (8202). The suite was adequate for us and our 2 adult daughters, and the balcony was huge!! Hawaii is awesome and we saw some of the prettiest scenery we have ever seen. I will post pictures and my review tomorrow...just wanted to let everyone know how great Hawaii and POA are. (We had some minor issues onboard, but didn't let it affect our experience that much.) Any questions, just ask.

I did a lot of research here before we arrived in Hawaii, and I got a lot of great tips. We left from Newark airport and flew to LA then to Honolulu. (I was nervous because our layover was only 42 minutes, but we made it no problem and me and younger daughter decided to splurge for first class with lay-flat seats!!! Definitely the way to travel:D). Our flights were smooth and we arrived in Honolulu to warmth and sunshine!!

We stayed at the Outrigger Luana Waikiki. We had a city view room with 2 beds and a kitchenette. It is located very convenient to shops, the park, beaches, etc. We were happy with our choice. There is an ABC store right across the street that sells just about anything you could want. To the right of the hotel there are shops such as Victoria's Secret, Coach, etc. all within walking distance. We had dinner at the Hard Rock Café (a 5 minute walk from hotel) for Thanksgiving.

We walked to the beach and enjoyed the sun for an hour or so, then decided to do some exploring of Oahu before our reservations for the luau tonight. We found a Walmart and bought some last-minute things needed before the cruise. A friend of mine recommended the Bravo restaurant in Pearl City, so we stopped there for lunch. I had completely forgotten that it was Black Friday, and this restaurant is next to a mall!! The last place I want to be on Black Friday is a mall, so we ate quick and got out ASAP! That mall was hopping! The food was okay and service very quick, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there again.

We saw some awesome beaches/coastlines during our drive:

We paid in advance online for the Paradise Cove Luau and chose to drive out ourself. We got there at 5pm. The skies were turning dark, and it started to sprinkle as soon as we got our complimentary mai tai and were shown where our seats were. We walked around a bit, then it started raining a little harder. The staff came around and handed out rain ponchos to everyone. People started congregating under the shops and bars for cover. It was raining really hard. I asked my husband if we should just leave because I had no desire to sit in pouring rain to eat dinner, but we were afraid we wouldn't be reimbursed, so we stood under the cover with everyone else. After about 30 minutes of this, the staff came by and told everyone that dinner and the show was canceled and everyone would be reimbursed. I was glad that we didn't have to sit in the rain, but kind of upset because I was looking forward to the whole luau experience. Oh well, nothing we could do. (A girl in line in front of us stated she lives 15 minutes from the luau and it has never rained there before. It did seem to be an unusual occurrence for them. I felt bad that they lost all that business that night.)

We made it back to our hotel that night just minutes before the road was closed for the holiday parade. We watched the parade go by from our balcony.

We decided to have my husband drop me and the girls off with all our bags at that port and have him drive the car back to rental place. He pulled up and a porter came right over and loaded all our bags. My older daughter decided to ride with DH to drop off car. I followed porter in and tipped him, then off our bags went. Easy so far!! We sat in the building waiting for DH and DD to come back and I watched the lines of people come and go (we were there almost an hour before they came back). People were struggling to drag the bags to be dropped off and it seemed odd to me as usually porters grab the bags before anyone gets in the building. The lines would build up, but no one seemed to have to wait longer than 10-15 minutes to get through security (I kept my eyes on a lady with on orange shirt so I could get an idea how long it was really taking). As soon as DH and DD returned, we got in line and were through security in less than 10 minutes. We went to the VIP line for suites/latitudes, but the man that checked us in didn't seem to realize we were in a suite. I told my husband I didn't think we should be there, and that they usually give you room cards and introduce you to butler/concierge inside but he told me "I'm sure he knows what he's doing". It was when he went to the file boxes to find our room cards that it must have registered with him, because he couldn't find our cards, then he said "Oh, you need to come with me", and brought us to the suite waiting area;)....no apologies from DH:rolleyes:.

From there, we waited about 3 minutes, were handed our cards and then escorted onboard to Cagneys. We met Tom, the concierge, and he gave those of us there a little run-down of how things work (Cagneys for breakfast, tendering in Kona, dinner reservations, etc). Then we were brought in for lunch. Yay!! We were finally onboard!!

Excited for your review!

In the research mode for a POA cruise!

We are planning on the same cabin, too :D

I will post many pictures of the suite. We really enjoyed it, and managed okay with 4 adults and only 1 bathroom:D

Really enjoying your review.

We are sailing in a week and opted for the same 2 bedroom family suite for the two of us. We opted against the new suites as we were concerned about ongoing maintenance issues with them.

The suite was perfect for the 4 of us, for 2 it will be even better!! The thing I didn't like about it was the bathroom. The shower was very small. It is the same setup as on our Carnival cruise in July. It certainly doesn't "live up to" other suite bathrooms on NCL! The balcony is amazing though!! It is the reason I booked this suite. Here are a few pictures for you and I will try to complete review tomorrow.

Admittedly the balcony is the main reason we booked this as well. We could have booked a new suite on 13 deck for less $$ but I don't want to look at the pool :)

You will love the balcony!! Its huge. I even spent a few hours on a couple days between 2-5 am just lying on a lounger out there staring at the stars and listening to the sound of the wake when I couldn't sleep. It was so relaxing.

We heard that all staterooms were ready while we were still at lunch, so that is where we headed as soon as we were finished. We met our butler, Jose, who seemed very pleasant. We noticed that my pre-cruise concierge requests for bucket of Bud Light, fridge emptied, and egg crate for the 2nd bedroom bed were not fulfilled, but Jose stated he would take care of it. While looking around the suite, we noticed that it didn't seem to have been cleaned properly (found a used make-up remover pad on the floor by a night stand, opened and used bottles of shampoo and conditioner as well as hair in the shower, and the carpet needed to be vacuumed.) This was brought to the attention of Jose. A short time later he brought our beer and we met our steward (along with the head steward-Maria Cruz!) Jose must have alerted her to the issues, and she arrived with Gary to find out what went wrong. I felt bad for the poor guy because I figured it was his "fault" that the room wasn't ready. We mentioned to Maria about the egg crate also, and was told it would be no problem. She said she would give us a bottle of wine for our "troubles". We told her it was completely unnecessary, but she insisted. Gary removed everything from the fridge. We also asked if there was a place to store all the pillows and blankets for the 2 couches as they were just piled on top of them. Jose said there was a store room right next door where they would be kept during the day (although Gary didn't seem to have any idea what he was talking about, so we would just shove them under the living room couch every morning). Also, I forgot but when we checked into Cagneys for lunch, they asked our name and we told her and she said "In suite 8702?". We said "no, we're in suite 8202". She asked if we were Linda and Steve (or something like that), and we said "no, Don and Kelly". They had us listed in suite 8702 and some other couple booked in suite 8202 with connecting room 8204. They said they would figure it out, and our cards worked for 8202, so we thought it was okay. There was a welcome letter on the vanity in master bedroom with the other couple's name on it and the connecting room door was unlocked, so we weren't sure what was going on (and we did have the same mix up with several other mailings left throughout the week). So far we are off to a bit of a rocky start, but we aren't high maintenance so we weren't that bothered by it.

The suite looked to be newly refurbished. The couch in the living room looked brand new. It pulled out to a full bed and my older daughter(26) slept there. We folded it up during the day so we would have somewhere to sit as it is the only seating in the suite other than beds and a couple vanity chairs. The master bedroom was big with a nice vanity area and closet and kingsized bed. The 2nd bedroom had a loveseat sized sofa that pulled out to a bed. We told Gary to just leave it as a bed all week since we weren't in room much during the day. My younger daughter(24) slept on that bed. It wasn't very comfortable, but I assumed once we got the foam topper it would be okay. (We didn't get it until the 4th night as no one seemed to understand what we were talking about. Gary tried by adding more and more comforters underneath, which did help somewhat.) The vanity area was perfect for the 2 girls and they were actually able to get all their clothes in the drawers and closet. We stored all the suitcases under the bed in master bedroom (which took some effort because we had a couple 28" hardside cases and there isn't a lot of room along the side of the bed;)).

The balcony was the highlight of the room, and the main reason I booked this suite. It was huge. It had 4 chairs and 4 loungers on it along with 2 small end tables. It never felt crowded. The area on the side of the ship was private, and the only time anyone from above or below could see you is if you were standing at the railing.

I didn't sleep well (excited to finally be onboard and the 5 hour time change were main reasons), so I got out of bed around 4am, wrapped up in the cozy robe provided, and went out on the balcony. I laid on a lounger and just stared at the stars, listening to the sound of the wake. It was so peaceful. DH and I let girls sleep in and went to breakfast at Cagneys. I got the waffles with carmelized banana syrup. They were yummy. We all showered and made our way off the ship as I had a car reserved. There were 5 or 6 areas for shuttles that weren't marked very well. Once we found out which "line" we belonged in, we waited for shuttles to come. It was hot under there, and very unorganized. Shuttles would just pull up-Enterprise first, then Thrifty, Alamo, etc. There was no real line and probably 20-30 people standing in same area waiting for a shuttle. We were waiting for Budget (which shared shuttle with Avis), and it seemed everyone else was too. When the shuttle arrived, 2 men pushed my daughters out of their way, grabbed a 3rd man, and got on shuttle!! They were the last 3 that fit so we had to wait for next shuttle!! We learned our lesson that day, and it didn't happen for the 2 other ports we rented cars at;). The shuttle took about 10 minutes, and it was fairly quick once in the shop. The guy at the counter talked us into upgrading to a Jeep with removable T-tops for $25/day more. We got a bright orange one...couldn't lose it!!

We drove the road to Hana. I only knew what I read on these boards about it, and was aware it was scary, but I was surprised that after about an hour, I was feeling nauseous!! I never get carsick. The scenery was some of the prettiest I have ever seen! We pulled into the Garden of Eden, and got a couple drinks at the stand there, but didn't want to spend too much time there, so we continued on. I will say that I was more than ready for the ride to be over by the time we got to Hana (2 1/2 hours later), but then we had to go back!! We decided to take the "forbidden road" (as noted on the rental car map) because I just couldn't imagine going back the way we just came. We stopped at the gift shop in Hana to use the bathroom, and off we went. There were numerous cars following us, so I guess they didn't care about the contract either! We followed a couple busses out, which was helpful because after Hana, the road gets really narrow and the drop-offs are crazy!! The busses lead the way and "pushed" oncoming cars out of the way.

they both won't fit ;)

My daughter wanted to stop for fresh coconuts, but no one was around :( (and there were no coconuts or we would have just left some money and taken one)

I was never so happy to make it off a road!! We went to a little bar/restaurant close to the pier to watch the NY Giants game (lame I know since we were in Maui, but we are huge fans and they still had a playoff potential then;)). My younger daughter and I left after we ate and ran to Kmart for some drinks and snacks to take to the beach tomorrow...it was close by. The Giants won, so we were in a good mood!! Drove back to the pier but the tiny parking lot was already full. The guard told us to turn right by "the green building", but we drove around several times looking for the right lot to park in! (It was dark and I didn't have my glasses, so we went back to the shack to ask the guard again). We finally found the lot, and it seemed far away, but the walkway was very well lit, and fenced in so it seemed somewhat safe.;)

We went to the show tonight (Polynesia?). It was kind of cheesy, but we stayed. What annoyed us was all the people that kept piling in after the show started at 9!! People walked in and climbed in front of us until 9:40...the show ended about 10 minutes after that:(. I think if you come that late to a show, you should just stand in the back, not climb across people to get to an empty seat...just my opinion though.

We went to bed exhausted!! Riding in a car on roads like that took a lot out of us! All in bed by 10:30.

We got up and went to breakfast again at Cagneys . We asked Tom (the concierge) where a good beach was to drive to. He said he liked Big Beach in Makena, stated it wasn't too busy like some of the closer beaches, so we got directions and headed off. It was starting to sprinkle by the time we pulled in and we debated staying or not, but decided "what the hell, we're gonna get wet in the ocean anyways, so let's at least go check it out". As we were walking in, many people were walking out (it was about 11:30). We figured they were just leaving because of the rain, but when we got to the gate there was a sign that said "ocean closed". We kinda giggled and wonder how you "close the ocean". A man and woman walking out said you couldn't go in the ocean because a man had been killed by a shark there about a half hour earlier. We thought they were kidding, but the more they talked, we realized they were serious. Anyways, now we had to go! There were several people standing around the lifeguard station, and a few scattered around the beach. You were allowed to stay on the beach, but not go in the water. We stayed for a couple hours, and it rained a little off and on, but the sun finally came out. A coast guard drove by many times on a jet ski close to the beach (I guess to make sure no one was going in??). It turned out to be a not-so-bad beach day. It was kind of sad though thinking of the person who died. (I researched it when we got back on the ship, and it turned out to be a man in a kayak fishing with his leg dangling over the side about a mile offshore. Apparently the shark came up and bit his foot off. It stated a man in another kayak traveling with him applied a tourniquet in an effort to stop bleeding but was unsuccessful. The man died at the hospital I think). Scary!!

We dropped the car off after the beach, and took the shuttle back to the port. We stopped at Costco first to fill up car (and saved $0.30/gallon!)We had dinner in the Liberty dining room that evening. Our server (Joao??) was awesome!! He was very funny and we loved listening to his stories. Me and younger daughter had salmon...delicious!! My girls drank the bottle of wine provided by Maria. It wasn't too bad, but I'm not a wine drinker. We went to the Not-So-Newlywed game. It was very funny.
